Drive Belt Options

Just noticed stone damage to my drive belt, bit of a bugger as done less than 3000 miles but we have a lot of coarse chip seal here in New Zealand. As a lot of my mileage is done in areas where it would take hours to get a tow and I’d have to leave my bike to get cell phone coverage I’m going to replace it and play it safe. Have been searching forums and internet for what I need for my 09 FXDF without much success. Have some questions for the “experts”:

    * 1 1/8” Wide 133 tooth – is this correct?
    * Is a non-harley belt better than a “factory” HD Belt?
    * Options I’ve seen on the net include. Any comments in regards these?
       - Falcon
       - Gates
       - Dayco Panther
       - Supermax
       - Primo
    * Where is the best place to source a belt?

    Any help/advice appreciated

The harley belt quality is totally ok to me
Some like the Panther, as it is more rubbery, and they think being stretchy it can survive stones
The power delivery capability is less though
Now if you meant to say you have a 1 inch belt, with 131 Teeth, part # 40046-07, then you are right
    You should measure and count
    133 t 1 1/8 is the domestic 2006 belt
    you are international 2009
The best place to source a belt would be either your local HD dealer, or perhaps one of the well reputed USA outlets that you will see mentioned frequently in various threads

A complete list of belt drive with HD PN# can be found in my DIY page found on my web site LINKY: http://www.motorcyclemetal.com/gpage23.html

As far as replacement beltss:  I spoke at length with the head engineer who developed the OEM Gates belt for HD.  There is no other belt that is made, with the exception of OEM HD, has the exact tooth count/mm and angle as a HD belt.  This is due to a HD patent.  The other belts are industrial belts only.  I know people replace the belts with other models and brands without problems.  Only HD/Gates makes them to fit the HD sprocket (pulley). None of the proceeding is my information but gleaned from an hour on the phone with the developer.  Gates Corp. 2975 Waterview Drive, Rochester Hills, Michigan 1- (248) 260-2300 USA.

I personally cut down (turned it down width wise) a 1 1/8" Softail 70T sprocket to accept a 137T 1" C/F dresser belt because it is the strongest belt out there.  The belts are one continues thread that is wrapped around the belt and one single thread can suspend your dresser off of the ground.

I also pay for PartSmart (lease) which is a collection of any and all parts still made by HD showing in exploded views and part list.  Just e-Mail me your request to my web site if you need help with identifying parts for your order.  As you know parts are very expensive to ship via USPO (cheapest) so try and source from a local dealer (at least compare pricing).  How do you use spell check on this forum?
