Dirt, rocks, belt drive, don't mix well. I had my XR1200 for about 4 months and loved it to bits. Awsome handling, and very comfortable for my 6'3"frame. I had a Remus 2 into 1, high flow filter and a TTS tune by Scotty and constantly saw doulbe ton figures on my private test track. Hey Bucket???

I would be looking at the Triumph scrambler for the sort of work you want to do.

    Regards Lofty

You should be able to convert the XR over to chain. I believe Mildura HD converted the XR1200 that they were prepairing for the jump record to a chain drive.

    Good luck with it.

G'day. I picked mine up late December and can't fault it. The stealer had a super deal going, I had never really thought about getting one until then but love it now. Fantastic bike. imho hands down the best all rounder. great commuter, good riding position, likes to lift the front wheel, I'm still playing around with doing stoppies, sticks like shit to a blanket through corners. Next to no chrome or polished alloy to maintain, just ride it then hose it off.
I ride to work at about 2am and even at that time find myself taking the long way there.
Maybe try Storz performance for a chain conversion; http://www.storzperf.com/index.html
    Cheers.
