advice on these options

    Hi All

Just after some advice on which path to go.

Option One- I can pick up an old FXE shovel. It is pretty much an assembled basket case as it has been sitting for about 5 years and last year it went under (to the bottom of the barrels) in a flood. I can pick this up for four grand. Bloke reckons it should be a goer with a new battery and fresh oil but I am worried about internals in motor and gearbox.

Option Two- can get an old hardtail santee shovel frame for $500 and build up a bike. This option will probably mean a lot longer option to get on teh road.

I have had (and rebuilt) an old FXE before but been off bikes for about 10years now. I like the old shovels and want to do a custom bobber up. Like the hardtail look but buggered back likes the shocks.

    Any advice welcome.

Why don't you ask him to get a battery and some oil and show you it will be a goer

That 4 grand shovel will cost you another 4 grand to get back on the road if you do it properly and do it yourself, if you pay someone it`ll cost a lot more, buy the frame and and the shovel and ebay the shovel in bits, then buy a new evo motor and box and use the money you`d have spent putting the shovel on the road on the evo, me i`d rebuild the shovel, but if not done properly you`ll hate it.

Buy the battery and oil yourself if it works good and well but if it don't it's still a cheap lesson.

I'm with Dave on this... option 3 would be way to go if you cannot get it running or are not able to determine condition of motor etc... I am in a similar boat, only my problem is that there are only 3 known Harley's up here and the likelyhood of getting one in is at the moment three fifths of fcuk all.... but if it costs me 8 big ones all up then I'm still in front as there is a 180% tax on anything imported and if I wanted to I could still sell it again for over 10 big ones. Besides one thing I have on my hands is time and there are some on here that would like to see me give the keyboard a rest

Second hand Honda 250's sell for between 5 and 7 big ones :(.......

Thanks all for the advice. No I am not Uniqueridez and don't own a HR Holden.

Bloke reckons bike would start with new battery and oil so might try that and the compression test. Don't mind making a new wiring harness.

Might also look at the option of buying both and parting out shovel like suggested and keeping anything good.

Keep the advice coming if anymore thoughts

    Cheers

Went and had a good look and isn't in too bad a nick. Didn't do compression test but it hadn't been started for about a year and fired up after half a dozen kicks and ran nice and smooth. Belt on primary is stretched and started working its way off so could do much more than get it running.

Told bloke next day I would take it but he is having second thoughts as starting the old girl up and talking about his biking times has got him keen again. Waiting to see which way he will go.

If I get it I will post a picture and a total of what it needs to get on road.

    Thanks again for advice.
