How much will this cost

On the way home from my riding course on Sunday I was riding up the Monash fwy in Melb at 9.30 on Monday morning in very busy traffic & my Sportster blew a belt, the bike has done 4,500 km.

Got it carried to the local HD dealer by the RACV (really good service) off the fwy emergency lane. The dealer has the bike but no belt for it so I had to leave it there & get the train back home & will go down to pick it up at the end of the week when it is ready.

How much should a belt & fitting it cost me, my guess $400 or thereabouts, what does anyone reckon.

ditto... I would be claiming warranty.... if it was anything else there should perhaps be evidence on one or both pulleys

Can't get warranty I bought the bike at 1,900km, but its a 2005 model. But six hours to change a belt then it is going to be up around $1,000 apart from my trip back down to Melb to pick it up. I had been riding lots of stop start hard braking & accelerating at the course I had just been doing but it would not have been worse than a few Weeks or maybe a month of busy commuting.

At the dealers they mentiond a repair kit, I did not follow up or ask about that cos I did not go back down the fwy to find the broken belt. Anyone heard about a belt repair kit????

Hey Dermie. My belt snapped on my Road King, a stone was caught on the edge of the belt and tore it. You can see where it was torn, the indent of a stone caused the tare. Thankfully no damage to the sprockets. Big bucks for replacing on the big V-Twins for the above mentioned reason. A lot less time with the sporties though. Cost was around $1500.00. Now here's the good bit. I rang QBE to see if there was any chance they will cover stone damage to my belt, and they covered it. Total cost to me was $300.00. and no increase in premiums. It might also pay to check your handlebars after, as RACQ pulled the handlebars down when they put it on the truck, and when they wheeled it off the truck, the brake lever scratched my tank.
