I was passing trough Taipei International Airport, Taiwan, when I happened across this Harley Davidson bike in a shop front on my way to the departure gate..  I thought it might be an Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson or something similar, any ideas?, has anyone seen one of these before?

After extensive research, I am confident that the bike in question is a replica of a famous H&D bike. Its circa 1906-07…and a fine example of one of Harley & Davidson early models; in fact it really put H&D on the map. It was the first HD with telescopic forks and encased rear shocks. Many considered it was an attempt by H&D to destroy the very fabric of travel. With their "distinctive atypical" looking bike, to this day it still carries the nickname “Blue Light”. Because when you looked upon it, it fills you with a peace and confidence. Unfortunately the trend was frowned upon by the public and other bike builders.

Following protests and media outrage, and there is strong evidence of an attempt of industrial sabotage by other builders a meeting was established between Harley accompanied by the brothers Davidson and a few rival bike builders, during the meeting the usually quietly spoken Arthur Davidson was heard to say: “If you don’t like it, you can shove it. We will corner the market one day”. The meeting continued although the ending was a collection of threats and violence. It erupted after the intoxicate and loud Arthur Davidson yelled, “You can shove that Indian up your arse.” It’s a little known fact that Harley and the Davidson brothers ended up spending that night in gaol.

The trend never caught on for many years, legend has it that while Harley and The Davidson were sleeping off their booze, someone destroyed the only prototype of the “Blue Light.” Completely outraged H&D refused to build another motorbike with the same specs as the Light. Harley sums it up the best; “Let the public have sore arses if that is what they want.”

Hope this has cleared it up somewhat.

    Cheers
