    Hi all,

I cannot make my mind to go 95 or remain 88...I have an 05 fboy and have done some minor work

    42Mikuni, S&S 570G, crane HI-4tc, SE slip ons..

It goes good down low/mid and just ok up top....but I WANT MORE

so i need some thoughts on wether i just up the comp to around 10.2 with just high domed forgies and keep it 88

or go 95 with under 10.1 comp....

I ride solo and am thinking do i really need the higher displacement and possible issues with going 95...

    what do you all thing....thanks

Hi nt88, hard call . have a strong runing 95 it has very similar set up to you, but i have andrews 55G cams and use a CV51 carb, i just have harley head castings and about same pipes as you. 88 inch has soime good points like a very strong cylinder wall that holds its seal better than 95, or if your talking longer stroke late model 103 . i think you could see a gain with more compression and also some head work but probably your best bet would be some of these newer SE heads not sure what they call them as i'm not a hard core products man. but the newer SE heads look good, just they use special pistons and you might find you have to go to 95 as not sure if you would find in 88 size, also look at a carb that flows more air.

This is a question for Scotty to answer IMO. I could be wrong, but if you want more power, you may need extra work done on the bottom end as well. I know I'm saying the obvious, but I'm in the same position as you where I've done the carby (Mikuni 42), and gear driven cam, and still want more. The mechanic said if I do any more it can get very expensive.

aunty x, i think the stock bottom end is ok , i ran mine stock till last year & road the bike a lot then twisted the flywheels out of coppoling. nothing much you can do as no replacement rollers so can't rebuild like you could with EVO's. i just had mine welded, but that won't make it stronger.

i ran 11.3 in the quarter mile yesturday, and was saying to some m8's at the track we should ride over Perth to race in western nationals next year just to show we have quick street harleys and not over 100 inch. that 11.3 was easy i did not even try off the line just let motor idle and opened it up as i let clutch out.

    cheers.

thanks Krash & Aunty, for your replys...I have done a lot of research on my issue but research comes second to having someone who has physically done both.... I now that both 88 & 96 use the exact same cylinders and rods...the displacement is from the crank alone...so boring out to 95 has some issues (in my mind)..such as will it over heat on hot traffic days..whilst i realize you can richen up the carby mixtures to fix a hot day in traffic you have to concern yourself with other normal operating temp as well....hopefully i will hear some more on this to help me make up my mine....

Scotty, are you talking about stock TC barrels and linners? borred to 98" with stock early TC stroke?

My 95 does not seem to get any hotter eather.

but i'll bet if you ride hard with them sized out to 98" or 107" ( especially the 107" i'll bet you will see the uneaven wear and can see the 4 studs, like the 80" EVO's. but if your happy thats the main thing what was the gain over a 95" with same set up same heads same cams same pipes same intake?

on the mik 42, i have never used one, but  Cow told me he flowed a HSR42 and it did not flow any more air than a CV40. i have tried cv40, cv44, woods rebel (bored out cv44) cv51 s&s D. the s&s D made the most Horspower & Torque of the lot, i had it on a s&s G manifold that had a 1" G spacer Cow made to match the D, that set up was still making power @ 7,200 where rev limiter was set did 121.9mph trap speed 11.2 as you would ride on the street no wheelie bars Avon 16" 90 x 150 venom tyre foot shift no ignition cut out s&s clutch 3.37 gearing and was in 4th gear going through the traps. but the ol D i have owned since 1982? is not perfect ( no excellerator pump, and can be finicky ) so i just use the cv51 right now. but just trying to explain what i've found from trying, the 95 needs lot more air so what would the 98 or 107 be like as, from what i have seen, if you can't give a bigger inch motor extra air it won't make more power it will just make more torque. ( this is talking stock HD heads ) i just use the cast 01 heads. and as anyone that knows me would atest to the bike could go faster and quicker with a good rider.

    cheers

Guys, thanks heaps..........I will go 95...since my concerns where heat related (it can get very hot/dry down here -Australia)....i may rejet the 42 or go 45mm Mikuni just to make sure I have enough supply (have a high flow tap fitted already)...need to find someone who knows what to do with the heads / cylinders down under next and get a set of wiseco /cp pistons. I will keep comp under 10:1 as I have been told there will be starter motor issues unless I have preasure release valves fitted etc (which i dont)...

Hi NT88, i could not say on head work in Melb unless it was John Treese ( he is a class act ) as he is the only one i have seen,s work.

also from what i have seen the s&s manifolds flow the most air, its no good useing a larger carb if the manifold is restrictive. i like the mikuni 48 or the KeininFCR if you want a flat slide the Keinin FCR is a class act! i have screamin Eagle compression releases in stock 01 heads they work fine, i have stock starter & over 10:0.1 comp. i had the stock starter go after about 5 years then put the decompression valves in rebuilt starter no prob since but can be grumpy at times if battery power low, i use the same ignition as you & it needs the battery at full charge or it will kick back but a great ignition! stock coil and Nologey leads.
