Gday all,
A mate and I are planning on buying harleys and road tripping around the USA over a few months and finally ending up in Canada. There are a few problems with this
#1...This is a very green question but it needs to be asked on a forum like this so i can get the word from all over Australia. I was going through the motions of getting my 250 license a few years ago but due to my financial situation at the time i had to cut back on a few things and unfortunatley the lessons got the chop(spewing now). Now i want my license but hate the look of 250cc bikes and being from WA we don't have the LAMS law that some other states have and i doubt my 6'3" frame would suit a 250. I have heard rumours that in QLD you can go and sit your open license from the get go. Would love to know if there is any truth to this and if my license would then be valid Australia wide.
#2 ... If the above question is completely out of the question does anybody know what my chances of being ok to ride in the USA on a restricted license ? or are the cops pretty onto it there like they are here, plus insurance dramas ect
I know a few of you old hands out there might think i am trying to run before i can walk but please indulge me for now.
Cheers,
Bob
P.S. I am looking at the Fat Bob at the moment looks awesome and have read that it is a nice bike for touring and handles well.
Most of the cops in the USA would not even know what they are looking at when it comes to licenses from other country's. The other thing is if you stick within the road rules then you should not have a problem over there i did a 6 week almost 20,000 km run in 08 all over the country and didn't get stopped once and i was on a Canadian registered bike.
Soapbox2627 - Register General hey ? wonder if he would even read my letter if i am a west australian. Sounds pretty full on
Kiwibouncer - Yeah thats what i thought as long as i dont fuck around i reckon they would be happy to see an aussie touring on a harley
Steamer - Yeah definately getting an international haha as long as it doesnt have restricted to 250 stamped all over it
DLUX 66 - Na mate not RR dunno who that is
obiwan - Yeah can kind of do that in WA
Destroyer - All good mate by some stroke of luck managed to slide under the radar so far, touch wood
Cheers every one for replies ... looks like there is not some mystery state where i can waltz in and skip the pre school stage. In WA i can apply for my L plates for my un-restricted license the day after i get my restricted license so i can in theory get my 250 license then walk out and buy a bigger bike and just ride with L plates on so long as i am with another experienced rider. Might just have to do that.
