Hi Kiwi, there was a recent thread on oil filter removal tool and a few of the guys posted some handy methods of getting filters off without the special filter wrench. Use the search function and you will find it.

hi kiwi, a cheap trick you could try is to get an old belt and wrap that around and have the bite going against the direction of and twist it off just gotta get that bite right though in correct direction

A friend of mine mad a filter wrench for out out of 1/2" hollow square bar with a slot cout in it & a piece of seat belt.. You can then put a 1/2" drive ratchet on it. Works well .

The biggest problem with filters & spark plugs for that matter is that people think that they need to tighten the hell out of the . Off memory for a filter is tightn until seal then another 2/3 of a turn.

Sump plugs are another one people think tighter is best.
