Hi ppl, just like to ask the question here, on the Fatbob as it has the dual headlight thing going on, is the set up on those by HD one is the normal low beam light and the other high beam? Also can this configuration be changed so that both lights come on with low and high beam, would it be hard to do? Last but not least, is the HD bulbs that the new bikes come out with any good or should I be looking to change them and which ones are worth changing to?
Thanks
Smick,
International HD Fatbob headlights, r/h low beam & l/h high beam. This is achieved by the headlight reflector unit (one piece) having different aiming left and right, and cannot be changed. Bulbs are both 55 watt H11 single filament.
Domestic (USA and Canada) HD Fatbob headlights: both on for low and both on for high beam. The reflector aiming is the same for left and right. High and low beams are created by having dual filament globes.
You can buy on the internet, from the USA, the US domestic reflector for about $300 + shipping. You would also have to changed the wiring inside the headlight and get dual filament globes to achieve your goal.
What I have done:
I have changed the wiring, inside the high/low beam switch, to have the r/h light on for low beam and both on for high. If I want to be more visible during the day, I just select high beam and ride around with both lights on. I have also changed both bulbs to 65 Watt H9. The H9 is not a direct fit, but after cutting off one of the keyway guides in the end of the bulb, it will fit.
Here is how to do it: You go into the dimmer switch wiring by taking off the left side switch cover top. Undo a small torx screww holding the harness in place. Cut the Yellow wire about 2cmm (3/4") from where it goes into the dimmer Hi/Low toggle button. Heat shrink it off. Then splice the yellow wire from the main harness into the Blue wire which leads to the breaker. Make sure it's insulated and re-assemble the switch housing. Now you'll have your right light on for Low and BOTH lights on for High. There's only 3 wires involved from the Hi/Low toggle switch so you can't go wrong.
Good Luck,
Colin.
Hilly,
Unfortunately, the reflectors in the Fatbob are in one piece. L/H side aimed up for high beam, R/h side aimed down for low beam. The US reflector is different, both sides with the same aiming and high and low beams are created with dual filament bulbs.
I would look into this further because the vehicles are driven on the other side of the road the US reflector and lens mightl be biased to the right rather than off to the left. This is less effective and a pain for oncoming traffic.
This is certainly an issue when buying headlights for hot rods from the US.
cheers Surly
No difference in where the beam sits on the road, never get flashed by on coming traffic but the light is so much better than the standard aussie spec light.
When you look at the reflector it doesn't seem to have the noticable left and right cures it looks more uniformal as if it designed just to shoot straight ahead.
I can't remember who I got it off but it would have been St Paul or Adventure HD as I deal with them 2 all the time. I got the complete lamp assy but am pretty sure that I could have just bought the semi sealed beam bit. Complete lamp came with wiring harness, mount etc, only difference in the harness was one less wire as the U.s spec does not have parking light globes in them.
I got an auto elec to wire mine so both are on all the time, cant notice the difference between left and right, i dont have high beam techically, tho when switched at the switch the blue light comes on in case someone wants to get picky. Twin lights on at day loooks bright and never been flashed at night, not that i do a lot of night riding
