At what point is a bike a write off?

Trev, i saw a softail nearly bent in half at the Brisbane auctions that was classed as a repairable writeoff, all depends how much money you want to spend to repair it and then get it approved for registration again over and above the purchase price

steer clear , it will now be on Vcheck for a start as a repairable w/off , and you just dont know how bad the frame /steering head . it will cost the insurance co. over a $1000 to get it properly assessed and quoted so they ar efar better of calling it a repair w/off and let someone else take the gamble.

Went through something similar a few years back with my Trumpy TT600, insurance company decleared it a repairable write off puerly because of the value of the cosmetic damage, apparently bikes less than 2 years old must be repaired to band new condition using OEM parts, we managed to negoitiate with the insurance company and repair agency and get an after market performance exhaust, after market fairings and mirrors - all cheaper than OEM which brought the repair costs down and bike was no longer "written off"

From memory if the repair cost get over a certain % of the bikes value they deem it a write off - if your wondering why we didn't just make the insurance company get us a new one ... it was the last of it's model and there were no more new ones the same colour left in Oz.

The expected value of the wreck plus the cost of repairs exceeds the sum insured...constructive total loss in insurance terms or repairable write off.

eg They expect to get $5k for the wreck and there is $5k in repairs and the bike is insured for $9k. Give the owner $9k and sell the wreck and be $1k better off.

    Hope this helps.

    cheers
