Importing a Harley into Australia from the USA

    G'day all,

I hope anyone out there can help me.

I am an Aussie currently working in Texas, and am wanting to buy a Harley to bring back home. From the research I can find, I know I have to own and ride the bike in the US for at least a year, and that there are some small mods I have to do (orange indicators, change the speedo to km/h etc).

What I am not sure of is the possibility of registering the bike in NSW. I see something about having to get an Australian Compliance Plate or a Letter of Compliance from Harley Davidson. I've heard this is very difficult (this was from the RTA).

Has anyone out there managed to complete this process successfully?

The bike I've got my eye on is an 03 Heritage Springer. I added a couple of pictures belows. It sounds and looks sweeeet.

Any help you could give to get this ride back to my garage in Oz would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks alot.

    Tony

Thanks for the response enforcer. I'll check it out.

For the price, they have US$14995 on the sticker. It has only 9300 (14880 km) miles on it. In Texas, for title, tax and license it will cost about US$1000.

Since it's been freezing cold here (under 0 C during the day) i could probably get it for US$15000 out the door.
I tried to find some comparitive prices in Oz. But there doesen't seem to be too many of this model.

As ozroder mentions etc a bike is not that hard. Use a local Freight Forwarder and get a written quote for an "all up" price. You will have to pay GST (no duty) but you can claim the GST back - you are expected to pay it though and re-pay it should you sell the bike locally.

Get proper insurance for the shipping as anything in a seafreight container is at big risk damage, and it comes down to the stuffing of the container etc, put aside several hundred for proper crating etc. You'll also need to remove all oil and petrol etc. You will not be able to send as air (without huge costs and dangerous goods issues) so allow 45 days from departure until rolling into your driveway.

Duty free and GST 10% of the value your declare - but be fair as you can shave a bit but if it looks like your taking the piss they WILL do an audit.

Not sure as your coming out of there, but as an Aussie importing you still require a FORS (Federal Office Road Safety) Certificate prior (BEFORE!!!) you export.

I was going to do it myself but in the end a new (well 2009 but brand new) CVO came up at a serious discount.
