I was trying to get royal purple for the Road King but I couldnt get the right spec at my local Auto One.  I was gonna run Mobil 1 Vtwin but the cost was an outrage.  So I was gonna run Mobil1 for cars, but could only get 0W-30.

Long story short they had Penrite Sin 10 which is a full synthetic 10W-70 oil.  I was worried that 10W was too thin and 70W would be too thick.

I checked on the net and the cold viscosity is actually higher (ie its thicker) than the royal purple and Mobil 1 V Twin, and the hot viscosity is way more than both.  The Sin 10 is thicker at 100deg C than both oils, and the viscosity index is higher too which means the oil is more stable as temperature increases.  Penrite recommend it for 4 stroke motorcycles, but dont mention Harleys specifically.

    For $70 for 5L I thought I would give it a try.

My bike is an 09, with a S&S 124 cube  kit and runs hotter than Satans pizza oven in traffic.  I have a cooler, which seems to help, but as everyone knows the cooler doesnt do much when the bike is moving.  I figured an oil with more viscosity and temperature stability must be a good thing.

Anyhow, I am pleased to report that it runs very well and I would recommend it.  It ends up being loads cheaper than Royal Purple, or Mobil 1 V-Twin, and on paper looks much better.

I use the K&N filters - easy on and off with the 17mm nut on the top.

171 B for the black ones or 171 C for chrome.

I get them from Auto One. They dont stock them but can get them.

I got my local bloke to get me 6 and he took somethin like 6 bucks each off the price.

Been having a bit of a look around at oils and have come across Castrol Edge Sport 25W50 full synthetic blended for big bore push rod, roller rocker race engines. Super Crap are selling it for about $38 for 5ltrs, seems to go just as well as everything else, IMHO Castrol have managed to get a fairly good rep for their oils so I figure do regular oil changes 2500 - 5000 km and can't go wrong.

The above is off their website. I reckon the 70W is too thick personally. It might not flow well enough to get into those critical areas.
I am going to try the sin 25 when I run out of Mobil 1 VTwin. A hundred bucks plus for six litres of oil....sheesh!!

Can't find Sin 25 anywhere!!! Went to Supercheap...sorry mate, have'nt had it for a while. Saw the Castrol Edge Sport 25W50, but it is mineral not synthetic. (I made the sales guy ring them direct). Got some Mobil 1 5W 50 full synthetic for my wifes car at Christmas for $50.. I reckon it's too thin though.

I've always believed that the price of good oil & filters is cheap when you compare it to the price of a rebuild. In my Evo wide glide, I ran Harley genuine minerals in the primary & gearbox  as I can't get my head around running light oil in the gearbox (call me old fashioned). I ran Mobil V twin in the engine with a genuine filter. The Dyna's have a longer filter the the softails, obviously the factory knew why they did this so I stuck to the genuine one.

On one of the US Harley forums the guys use Mobil 1 Synthetic car oil for the engine (15w50 or 20w50). I have check it out here & you can order it in.

I have just bought a 2000 Wide Glide that I will be doing exactly the same on as the Evo, Mobil V Twin & genuine filter for the engine & genuine Harley oil for the other 2 holes (again call me old fashioned).

    Thanks Lastrain for the info.

I've been using Amsoil for the last few years, and i've been changing it every 6 months, thing is it's supposed to be good for 25000 miles, so it made no sense to me to change it every 5000 ks when it should last much more.
I thought as long as i do regular oil changes dino should be fine.
I'll give it the castrol a crack, maybe i'll try the synthetic a go next change.

    Really appreciate your info.

I have been trawling this forum and the rest of the WWW to help decide which oil to go with for my first ever Harley.  So thanks to everyone who has posted as, even though it is a heated debate, you guys have helped.

Basically what has been highlighted is everyone has their favourite for what ever reason but the one single constant has been clear.   That is read up then make a choice your happy with.  Really as long as you choose a good quality oil of the reccommended type your probably going to be safe.

I will stick with the Syn 3 with genuine filters every 4000 Km option for now.

One thing that I did find that helped decipher all the numbers and letters xx W xx and API is found here www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html  yes it is a car forum but it does decipher the standards pretty well.
