hi, back the clutch cable adjuster off to near zero , & un cover the clutch basket  on the left side of the bike  undo  locknut screw adjuster ,   screw in untill it reaches home ( do not go pass presure plate  spring presure just bring the adjuster home you will feel it if you do ) then bring out the adjuster screw out 1/2 to 3/4 turn, big twin  5spd i set at 1/2 turn tighten lock nut ,    then adjust cable up last leave a bit of free play in it 1/16 "  to 1/8" ,     thats it

There is another way to do the actual adjustment as written below. I find this just a bit more accurate that the service book method, although that method works fine as well.
Thanks to a guy called HIPPO from another site. I use this method and it works well too. He won't mind if it post it here:

    Straight from Hippo:

1.Loosen the clutch cable adjuster and shorten the cable sleeve as much as possible, but don’t mess with the lever. Just leave it alone until the 3rd step.

    2. Loosen the lock nut on the clutch pack push rod adjuster.

    3. Pull in the clutch lever. It should touch the handle bar grip. If it does not touch the handle bar grip back out the push rod adjuster at the clutch pack while keeping light pressure on the clutch lever until it touches the handlebar.

    4. When the clutch lever touches the handle bar turn in the push rod adjuster while keeping light pressure with your hand on the clutch lever. When you turn in the adjuster it will start to push the lever off the handle bar.
Back the adjuster out until the lever returns to just touching the handle bar. Do this a couple of times until you know you are at the point where the lever is just touching the bar. When you find this point - back the adjuster out 1/2 turn and lock it down.

    5. Adjust the clutch cable to 1/16" to 1/8" slack and lock it down.

    NOTE:
Buy a cheap 11/16 deep well socket and weld a nut on top of it. This makes the perfect tool for the adjuster lock nut as you can then use an allen wrench inside the socket to prevent the adjuster screw from turning with the nut. Makes it a lot simpler.

Hey Scotty, No probs I've got the flack jacket on.....

I use this method ony my 1996 Evo Softail and my recently sold '96 FLHT and it worked fine for me. No idea what the fuss would be about-- just thought I was doing a "public service" number by putting it up.

I've used both and find Frank's method to be more precise but hey, whatever works for others is fine with me.

Cheers and thanks for the heads up...

(edit done to fix smelling pistakes...)

Yeah good point dave sorry, i could have said its a  5 speed behind a 1340, the cable goes into the front of the side cover on the right hand side, but anyways i think the other guys have steered me into the right direction, thanks heaps.
