The toughest road safety campaign in Queensland's history is about saving lives - not raising revenue, according to Premier Anna Bligh.

"I would be happy if we didn't make a dollar out of this because that would mean that people weren't speeding," she told reporters on Sunday at the opening of a new rail extension at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast.

The campaign, to be rolled out over two years from 2010, will include new types of speed cameras and alcohol ignition interlocks which drink drivers will have to pay for themselves.

A system of point-to-point speed cameras will be introduced for the first time in Queensland, and undercover vehicles will be used for up to 30 per cent of mobile speed enforcement.

There'll also be new digital traffic light cameras which can detect red light running as well as speeding, and there'll be no warning signs at camera sites.

"We've seen more than 300 people die on Queensland's roads to date, and that could climb to as much as 340 before the year is out," the premier said.

"That is far too many and enough is enough. This has got to stop and the best way to make sure you don't pay a fine is don't drive drunk and don't speed."

Ms Bligh said she wasn't concerned about the tough new measures affecting her already record-low popularity.

"What I'm worried about is the people who are dying and being injured on our roads.

"We've seen families torn apart by this. My responsibility as Premier is to continue to work with the Queensland Police Service and put new programs out there that stop this sort of behaviour.

"People are not only a danger to themselves, they're a danger to everybody else.

"I want my family safe on the roads, and so does every other Queensland family," she said.

Victoria has a 3 point leniency on the speed limit. Queensland will have a zero tolerance. If this isnt revenue raising I'm stuffed if I know what is

The Queensland idea of one k over and youve got a ticket is ridiculous, we all know how easy it is to sneak over the limit by 1 or 3 km's if ya not careful, now we will have to spend most of our time watching the speedo instead of the road.....gee thats gunna help

1km over is absolutely rediculous, The only way they can enforce that is to have ADR's changed so that vehicle manufacturers are no longer allowed get away with a + or - 10% accuracy rating. If you buy a brand new vehicle and the speedo is out by 9% you will be thinking that you are doing the speed limit yet be racking up a lifetime of debt and the need for some good walking shoes.

Here in SA there used to be a 10% buffer which is fair enough considering that a speedo in a brand new car can be upto 10% inaccurate and still be classed as legally acceptable but the government weren't making enough out of it obviously and they went and changed it. No idea at all what the official buffer is here now.

All this talk from this tunnel c*^ted whore is beyond belief, she will implement it because she has put this state into so much debt, she has to recoup the dollars from somewhere, what better way than to sell off government assets and fuck the people of QLD over by jacking up rego, taxes, and incresing the fines through speed cameras, will this bring down the road toll, not while her snatch is facing down, why, beause people are still going to speed, drink drive and drive like fucking lunatics, this is all about her and her little arse licking treasure trying to fix their fuck up, as she always says it has always been a mandate of hers to do these things, the only thing she has says thet is true is she has a MAN-DATE

only my observation but i haven't seen a decline in any of the deaths and injuries caused on the roads since all these cameras and devices have been implemented. Its obvious that these measures are simply to raise cash.

We send millions a day overseas to places like Indonesia to get them to help stop illegal immigrants and things like disaster relief. I have never ever heard of Indonesia or others in the region sending us any money for anything. The money we send OS alone would go along way to fixing our hospital system amongs other things.

We voted for the government, We got sucked in by the spin. I personally cringe when i see political adds prior to elections because I realize how many fucking fools we have in our society that believe it and vote accordingly.

I saw some numbers on pensioners verses immigrants the other day (sent them to 4KQ) $19.000 for pensioners up to $52.000 for immigrants.

I also know people who are knocking back good jobs because the benefits and subsidies are better. I'm fucking over it. specially when im paying my tax bill.
