In the service manual for my 1995 FXSTC it doesn't mention(or I didn't see it) about removing the sump plug on the bottom of the motor when you do an oil change...It say's about the filter and the oil tank, which is what I have been doing but was wondering about the oil in the sump...Am I missing something here????

    Thanks...Sparra

Ando is correct on this one. A little old oil in the sump won't hurt it. Any other bits, let the filter take care of it.

You won't need to touch that plug.

But there is a trick to remove ALL the old oil.... which draining the tank never does, of course.

The ''five quart'' oil change. Take the old filter off, fresh oil in the tank, run motor, and **while keeping a careful eye on oil level in the tank and topping up if necessary** run the engine until the oil pouring out of the filter housing into the bucket is the fresh clean stuff. You will be amazed how much old oil is flushed out doing this.

Used to do this every year on my Evo...

WOW, thats one way to do it.... how much of a mess does it make with the oil coming out??

It works all right mate, just put the pan under the front and start her up. usually takes about 30 40 seconds before new oil comes thru. Switch off, new filter on, wipe up excess off front frame, top up oil.

Dont leave the oil filter off a Twin Cam and then run it to clear the oil. Evo oil filters are on the return to oil tank line while TC filters are on the feed to the motor line. No oil feed to motor is a bad thing. On Twin Cams the oil return line is at the back of the motor. Easy on the 88's, behind the filler on 96's. Check out http://roguechopper.com/

I thought it was a good idea...but as Scotty said..the bit of old oil left in won't hurt anything.

Quick question. What about swapping over from mineral oil to synthetic? Would that left over amount of mineral oil affect the lubricating qualities of the newly added synthetic oil?
