Ok, you asked for my honest opinion! And that is to get rid of the damn things, IMHO they are not worth the trouble to keep clean, you spend ages getting them perfect go for a ride and they are filthy again, they tend to show up every little bit of road grime, and even when the rest of your bike looks reasonably clean after a wash and a fine weather ride, your whitewalls always look grotty when ya get home. I would rather spend my time riding than cleaning stuff like that. They were on one of my bikes when I bought it, and by the time I needed new tyres 3 months later I was turned off them for life. Unless of course you have oodles and oodles of time up your sleeve to waste then go for it. I used to scrub mine with a detergent solution and a moderately stiff brush.

Mate, I have a Deluxe. Don't lose the white walls, they're easy to clean.
Use Jif with a mild scourer. They come up a treat.
That's all I've ever used and have no problems.
