    Guyz,

Looking for guidance on this one.  Just racked up 300 ks. Went for a 80 k ride today and got back home and found a slight oil leak onto the engine around the oil filter.  The oil leak covers an area around 10cm x 10cm onto the black ripple engine case.  Is this normal, abnormal or should I go back to the dealer for a check up?

    Cheers Big Ears,

    Burra.

No its probably not normal for a new bike, check with your hand to see if the filters loose but i`d not be losing any sleep over it, just keep an eye on the oil level. Some one will soon chip in with an explanation and a fix, I`ve got the Exxon Valdez parked in my shed. No one likes a visit from me if i park in their drive.

No not normal for a new bike to have a "leak", my 09 has a very very verrrry slight "weep" from the bottom of the crankcase only weeps enough to leave the crankcase seam damp and will collect a little dust over several hundred km's, keep it washed and clean - no problem and is so minor it doesn't bother me. dealer told me damp is acceptable but not if it is dripping.

As Houli said first thing to check is the filter ... after that if your not happy with the amount of oil leaking take it back to the dealer for a check under warranty, if it is making a mess over a realitivly short ride like 80 k I would be getting it checked IMO.

Shovel riders are well used to major oil spills and are frequently follwed by around by EPA vans and men in yellow suits, poor buggers are not used to Harley's NOT leaking :D :D :D

not good mate get it checked out....my 09 rocker leaked oil at the centre of the crank case where it is sealed together with that greay sealing compound you can see....the engine had to be removed and re-seald under warranty at only 800KM old...re seald crank case ..full gasket kit & rebuild....all good now..but i know how you felt when you seen that oil on the ground...

    Hey Burra
I wouldn't worry too much - I think its a defective oil filter
Have you tried tightening it (just by hand when its dry)

    I've had two oil leaks;
    1. Base of the rear cylinder - defective O ring ( common prob with the 110s )
remedy : dealer replaced seal all good.
    2. As one of the guys previously mentioned, where the crank cases join up
behind the rear cylinder, there is a spot where you put the prior bar in to seperate the case
leaking from join in between crank case.
remedy : dealer simply cleaned area with brake clean then applied silicone, all good now

    best of luck

    Steve,

Same here - nice to meet you to brother.  Tad wet but overall I loved it.  Got home to the inner west, let the bike cool - storm came through and when light druizzle came I went out and gave it a good wash and dry.  The sun came out and I put the softie away.  I an ringing the stealer on Monday and booking in for corrective action.  Catch you next one :)

    Graham.
