Bought a oil temp gauge today(dipstick type)just wondering if anyone knows what temp a twincam should be running at??? On the trip home mine seemed to sit at about 220deg.

allowing for slight inaccuracy between those types of guages, temp. measured in the oil tank would be considered normal if you were running synthetic oil and the reading had been taken during or staright afer a reasonable ride.I dropped my oil temp on my EVO by over 20deg. by useing a good quality synthetic oil.

Yeah 220 was about the norm for my old TC88, haven't got one in the new bike.

Hi have changed the air temp to a oil temp gauge on my 07 ultra and fitted it direct into the sump and on the open road it is on about 190deg F, but I have been caught in traffic in Melbourne and boy doesn't it go up, 230 and the engine management light came on. I also run synthetic oil which I think keeps the temp down a little.

Thanks all, I went for a ride with the missus on the back today, hot day, rode over a couple of ranges and the temp got up to about 240deg,hotter than I would like, but not abnormal it would seem, considering the feedback I have recieved here. It would be interesting to know what H.D. considers acceptable??

Had the bike serviced last Saturday 8000k and had all oils renewed. I put Amsoil in after 1600k in view of percieved  high temp concerns.

At this last service I went for dino oil again in the engine, gearbox and primary. Engine oil temp at about 25 deg ambient is just over 200f with HD360 etc. Methinks that a new motor being run in is likely to run hotter, more reason not to overdo it when running in..

There is also the problem of emission settings on a stock bike that makes it run very lean and consequently hotter.

The PC111 usb, Screaming E aircleaner and V&H BSS pipes have done more to lower temps than a change in oils. I intend to change oil more frequently never the less.

    Just my O2

noted there are a few threads re oil temp but picked this to continue.....

Purchased a Oil level & Temperature Dipstick with lighted LCD readout on my last trip back to Oz to put some kilometers on the Street Bob. Noted that the temp varied from around 90degC to 140degC depending on the temp/weather and location. The lower temp was cool weather with some showers and the high temp was city running stop/start with an ambient temp of around 34degC. Running the standard HD Oil without oil cooler and the bike has around 60K on the clock.

Did a comparison to a softy with oil cooler and there was only 10degC difference but the checks were only conducted in cooler environment.

Thinking that the 140degC is pretty hot and would be keen to do a further comparison with other bikes that have an oil coller when I get back to see if the difference is greater than 10degC when the temp gets over say 120degC.

Would love to know the results of this Uncle.Up until now,all of my bikes have been water-cooled(Except an old Z-250 that I learnt to ride on when I was 13 years old),so I too am fairly paranoid about heat issues. My riding does sometimes consist of bursts of stop/start riding, and was going to invest in an oil cooler, although after hearing the conclusion,it might not be worth going to that extent for the sake of a few degrees. Also not sure if it's possible to mount a genuine oil cooler due to the ABS controller ('11 Softtail Standard).

I wait with baited breath ........
