    Okay,

After trying to get an air cleaner for Kim's carb, and being told by a number of people, I picked up a reconditioned carby from the USA.  It arrived today and looks in very good condtion.  However it has no choke cable.

So, do I need one?  Any suggestions?

Any ideas on if I need to connect any pipes to vacuum's and where?

Also I note that my S&S air cleaner setup will not fit as the top of the carby hits it, any recommendations here?

Thanks and all the best for the new year.  Looks like 2010 will be the year for me to ride this baby.

    Regards,

    Troy

    Hi Troy,
Give us some details on the carby, such as make, type (Butterfly, slide etc) , did you get any instructions with it?
Do you mean it had no choke cable supplied? or that there is no choke provision on the carb. If there is a VOES
provision on the carby and you are running points just plug it. Does the backing plate of the S&S cleaner interfere with the carby?
or is it the outer cover.
    Regards,
    Cris

    Hi Cris,

    Here is the carby http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140367709857&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT

So no need for choke, thanks, I will find a plug for it.

The backing plate has different holes and yes also hits the top of the carby. Maybe I should look around for a CV air cleaner

Got ya, found a pdf manual of the carby and know now what a VOES port is.

"170 MAIN JET AND A 45 SLOW JET " So it looks like have larger jets, will this just use more fuel or not run right.

I will pop into the shop tomorrow and see if they have any second hand backing plates, I also need to replace the new cable as it is no longer long enough!

Will try it with out a choke for now before I buy one.

    Thanks again,

    Hi Troy,
Just like Bucket I ran the Old Girl without a choke for about 20 years,
never saw the need for one either. You might be running slightly rich
with those jets. Better slightly rich than slightly lean. Jets aren't expensive,
so you can always play around to suit the bike. Try modifying a second hand
backing plate, although a spacer will work it may place your leg at an awkward angle.

hi, if you are putting a CV on a early girl it's best to run a choke  set-up if no cable you must have a least the choke piston & spring & retainer nut  for the carb to work  you can buy this original  no probs ,    mikuni 40mm 2 bolt rubber flange mounts straight to the STD type shovel inlet manifold  or the shovel S&S manifold , for the air cleaner  the bolt mount pattern & air bleed vent  won't match up ,    there  is a  aftermarket  tear drop air cleaner  S&S copy style with the bolt pattern for the cv carb  if it hits the tank make a nice spacer for it or you could fit a fibre insulator block  inbetween the inlet manifold &  mikuni rubber flange to stop the carb from getting to hot , also put a carb support mount from head to air cleaner backing plate ,  check tappets & timing 1st before jetting carb or you will never get it  too good ,  cheers

looks like I will have to wait until next week or the week after, most the shops are closed over here. Called Peter Stevens but they would need to order any parts.

So will have to spend the time with the family he he.

Will report more once I have news.

    Have a good new year!

only called Peter Stevens as I wanted parts for a late model bike, cable/air cleaner etc. I called Pro Street, but they are out until the 11th of Jan. I am sure I will get there next year.
