I just bought a detachable backrest with luggage rack ($400 AU delivered off US ebay), sticks out like dog's balls when it's on, very minimal when it's off.

Shit, Thats a bit of a worry

I was seriously considering one of these but if they can bend I don't want it, I think you should be able to lean back on something like this with a bit of confidence

My pillion is a bit weighty, (Hope she don't read this Lol) And she ain't experienced at all on the back so I would hate for her to think she can lean back and then the bloody thing bends

Just saw that your backrest is bending?  We did some serious engeneering so that wouldn't happen.  Can you tell me some of the condtions you ride under... hard acceleration?  Where is it bending.  Do you put any bags on it?

I just want to get a good understanding of the situation so it can be corrected.

    Thanks

    Hmmmm

A piccy speaks a thousand words don't it

I thought this thing would have been made from a high tensile or spring type steel but looking at that I'm not so sure

It cant be good bending it back and forward, It will have to weaken it until someday it fails completely

Might pay to get one of those shirts that say on the back    "If you can read this, The bitch has fallen off"

Be interesting to see what Haulen Ass have to say about this, I would even consider posting this in the General threads so everyone is aware

    Hey Thrus7er,

When you bought the backrest from the guy in FL you had it mounted to a Bobtail fender and now it is on the Sportster.

I looked this over with my team and this is what we feel the situation is...

Now that its on the Sportster fender it has a different angle and a higher seat which puts the passenger higher on the bracket.

The issue is that we offer different backrests for each style of Bike / Fenders... different bends to accomidate different set ups.

Using the same backrest on differnt bikes / fenders puts it at wrong angles then add the increased leverage from the taller seat and the force form acceleration could very well compramise the backrest.

In short we think its the wrong bracket for the application.

    Ok Thrus7er,

You say I dont do my home work,  well we havn't answered right away cause thats what we were doing... our home work.  I guess my last post wasn't clear enough and that could have been my problem so now Im gonna paint a clear picture.  You buy a Haulen Ass backrest from Mr. Vall from Florida, not us.  I looked up his invoice and on Oct. 22 2007 he buys backrest number HA-FXD-CBR1 which is a 1986-2003 Sportster & Dyna backrest.  Your sporty is a 2008... Theres problem #1.  Now these backrests had to be changed for 2004 and newer sportsters because a frame and fender change.  We change the angle to bring the bracket forward.  That gets the new part number HA-XL-CBR2.  You show a pic of the brackrest bent on your fender but that is how the old version (HA-FXD-CBR1) would have looked as soon as you put it on a 2004 and newer Sport, Now I'm not saying it never bent but it looks similar.  Now you have a backrest that angles back too far and a tall seat which puts your rider on top of it not in front of it... Theres problem #2... and you even said she uses it like an arm chair which would be ok if she was in front of it.  Then you change it from fender to fender...Theres problem #3, there are different backrests for different fenders.

You buy a backrest from a guy in Florida for '86-'03 sportsers for your '08

The angle is wrong to begin with and then start swaping it from fender to fender.

Like I said before... wrong backrest... wrong application.

    Our backrest fit as follows

HA-FXD-CBR1:  '86-'03 FXD Dyna & XL Sportster    (the one you got from Mr. Vall)

HA-XL-CBR2:  '04-'08 Sportster (the one you should have gotten)

HA-FXST-CBR1:  '00-'08 FXST Softail with Bob Fender

    Hope this helps
