Hi all,
Well, December 23rd was D day for me (Delivery day, that is). Picked up the Iron after a long courting period having ordered it back in May or thereabouts. Wasted no time with the mods and rode it straight from the dealer to the garage (three kays) and installed drag bars, bar end mirrors and lowered Touring air shocks with 3-inch lowering kit. I also removed the exhaust and heat shields and buffed them with WD40 and scotch-brite to matt them up and get rid of the unwanted chrome-ness.
Next day was relocating the speedo with a an Autometer AU3029 bracket from Rocket Industries ($23.60) and to drill out the front fender and drop it down by an inch or thereabouts. I also threw on the Harley factory tinited front lenses. A word of advice here. Fraser's recommended kit for the front (rear combo stop/indicators mean a rear kit is no go) that is part number 69208-09 and listed to suit XL1200N comes with dual filiment bulbs - whereas the Iron uses single filiment bulbs. I had to buy the correct bulbs from Auto One.
Impressed with it so far overall, apart from the decidedly quiet exhaust. Next mod is a 'gronk' conversion to the stock mufflers and a second chop of the license plate mount system with LED bolts to replace the bulky stock item.
Nice torquey engine but needs more top end. My maths says an NHRS 1250cc kit and 1200 reflash will cost less than a screamin eagle Stage 2 filter, exhaust and chip reflash but achieve more power/torque so that's on the cards.
like what you have done... especially those pipes... neat
LOVE the bike, where did u get the bar end mirrors from?
Actually, edit that. - Where did you get the drag bars, bar clamp AND bar end mirrors from
Just got back from the maiden trip with ther missus on the back and apart from a sore bum (she hasn't been on the back of a bike in a decade) all went well. Did about an hour and the bike ran smoothly with the lowered suspension. The only hiccup was a pothole coming onto Anzac bridge that bottomed the rear tyre - no biggy.
All the parts for the build have come from learning from people on XLForums, and buying everything from Ebay USA primarily. The bars are Night TRain bars that have been painted in denim black to match the bike (bought 'em that way). Paid $50US for these. The bar clamps are on Ebay USA all day every day for around $25US. The rear air shocks are Touring 'Lowering' models that are 12.5-inch eye-to-eye. If you want a higher riding position the more common Road King shocks are 13.5-inches eye-to-eye. I haven't bought the air line kit for it yet as it needs some schrader valves to allow me to set the air pressures manually and I have yet to hunt them down in Oz. The lower air shocks are trickier to come by on Ebay if you want to buys them cheap, but if you're willing to pay whatever for them they can be bought for $100 - $150US a pair any day of the week. They just need extra washers to clear the belt guard if you keep it on - I didn't.
Speedo relocation bracket is an Autometer AU3209 that cost $23.60AUS from Rocket Industries.
There are tons of lowering block kits on Ebay USA, but I chose this one as it offered three levels of lowering - 1, 2 and 3-inches. Paid $75US for it from memory.
Bar end mirrors were from Ebay Aus and cost me $15 for the pair. They came from Hong Kong I think. Note that they only suit 7/8-inch superbike bars. I had to make a spacer using PVC tubing to get them to fit. They work better that you'd think but I am going to get some Lick's ones instead as these stick out too far and can't be tucked inwards as the stems are too short and they'll foul my fingers while riding.
All the parts are cheap!
thats a tidy scoot ya got
Brilliant. Love the never-ending opportunities to personalise HDs. Thumbs up Damon.
what spec are your drag bars? - I brought & am waiting on some 28 & 1/4 inch, 4.5 inch pullback 7.5 inch centre drags. - Hope they fit with the speedo relocation...
Your problem will be the the 7.5-inch centre. Mine is 10-inches with 4.5-inch pull back and it juuuuust fits. The problem isn't just the speedo bracket, you also have the front brake line kink as well as clearance to the indicators. The biggest problem I think you'll have, however, is the hand controls hitting the tank. Mine miss by about 5mm each side as it is....

that looks real trick man, I love it. I would have ended up on one of these if the xr1200 didn't catch my eyeballs.
nice ride brother...love the look of the Iron...
