Nice job if all you want to do is get the rear wheel alignment close,,,,, I used to do it this way for a while until I checked the alignment with a lazer alignment tool.
I now use a little hand held Bosch PLL5 lazer alignment tool I bought from Bunnings for around $25.00. ( projects a line rather than a dot )
Place or attach the lazer tool onto the face of the rear pully and project the lazer line down the belt toward the front pully, usually along one edge of the belt.
Adjust the rear wheel/axle so that the rear pully, belt, and front pully are all in line,,, can't get much better than that.
Same tool can be used for projecting lines from rear to front wheel, and vertical alignment of either rear or front wheel as well.
all in all, a handy and precise bit of kit that comes in useful for quite a few jobs.
