    Hey all,

Just put a deposit down for my new Iron 883... only prob is that I have to wait till the beginning of March till i get it (damn! not sure if I can hold out that long).

Not sure if its been asked here before but I have a couple questions!

I want to take off the reflectors... is this legal?  I am in the ACT.

Also I've been looking at the black SE pipes + buckshot cover and also the black Vance & Hines pipes but not sure which ones I will get as yet... actually like the look of the SE's a little better but I was hoping someone could enlighten me on the pros/cons of both... ie.  are the Vance & Hines much louder? (I actually don't want the bike to be too loud) etc etc

I'm sure I will have more questions in the weeks to come... :)

ps thanks to taffymarsden for the tip on flipping the mirrors!

    Dan.

Side reflectors are optional. Rear is law, no matter what state. Go Vance and Hines, nice.

Yeah, those reflectors have to go ASAP. As a matter of fact I turned up while my dealer was fittimg the number plate, and he was in the process of removing them himself..."You don't want these bloody things , do ya?"
    (Ya getting this, Taffy?)
And for mine I find the V&H pipes a little too loud and harsh, and I have read a few reports saying they don't give the best power. S&S are a little better, and the SE's are only a little louder than stock, which is good, unless you like having attention from PC Plod.

And if you really can't wait till March, there is a couple on showroom floors here in Melbourne. Dunno how you would go about rego etc, ,just a thought.......

Well as nice as the Vance & hines are I have to agree with Birch. Managed to hear a set and they are way too loud for me! I have actually now decided to keep the stock exhausts but modified. They quoted me $645 to get them sent away and have the internals changed. I have hear these modified ones on a 1200 sporty and they sound great!

    Yep reflectors are definately going!

Don't pay too much attention to Birch djs. I think he's up in the Territory and you know how the sun gets to those blokes. Or maybe it's the glare that makes them anti the reflectors. (As I recall Mrs Birch has a very nice 883 Low so he's a bigger expert than me about sportsters in general). If you really want to minimise the look there are a few shots of Irons in the US without turn indicators! Apparently these are not required in some US states. I've found the SE mufflers a huge improvement in sound, though other people say they are not much louder so I don't know how much of the new sound is the mufflers, and how much the heavy breather and tuner. A favourite moment of every ride - idling in the garage of my apartment block waiting for the roller door to open, while alarmed looking pedestrians look down the driveway wondering what is about to appear.

These pipes are Bassani Sweepers but I cant find anyone here in Aus that sells them... also that JD air in take rocks.... so if anyone knows or has seen them could you give me a shout...

If I cant I guess i'll have to chance my idea... was looking at V&H sideshots....

Noting Frank's preference for V&H they are too loud for me, though plenty of people like them. A bloke I know who had them said he couldn't ride more than 15 minutes without ear plugs.

Interesting to hear some find the V&H's too loud.. would there be a way to quite them down as they look spot on? As Taffy mentioned the quite baffle is an option but I've read it doesn't make much of a diff.

Birch also mentioned "SE" anyone have a pic, is that a make?

Thanks Taff, yes I'd seen these, now I know what they are thanks. Also didn't know SE was HD's tuning arm.. interesting. Looking over the states forms the modes were going to be V&H pipes, SE air filer with PPC5 chip... seems to be a winning formula, that is until I heard here that the V&H can be a little loud.

Americans like to be loud and obnoxious, me not so much though.. I'll have to hear a set before I get em.

Well I finally got my Iron this week!!  Loving it!

I decided to go with the V&H Straightshot HS slip ons with quiet baffles, V&H fuelpak and K&N RK-3929 high flow kit.     I'm definately not going to do any engine mods so the fuelpak was a nice cheap and easy option.  I also wanted to keep the stock air box so I went the K&N...  I know there are other options for this but I've been using K&N stuff for years and a like it.

But none of it is installed yet!  Have ordered it all and heaps of other stuff direct from the US (the exchange rate is so good at the moment) and it should all be here next week... almost got everything for half price compared to what the dealers want here.

Yeah, thanks kingchops... i did some research and it is a complete rip off.... the dealers just send down the road and pay $150 for someone to just do some quick baffle mod....  also that $645 i found out later was actually $695 and that DIDN't include labour to install!!!  I think they wanted another $100-200 to do that.

Hi DJS, any pics of the exhaust on another bike you can share?

I like how you reused the stock air box, especially since it has 883 actually printed on it. I might also look at just changing the filter as you have.

I'm sure you searched a while for the best online prices, are you able to PM the store you used.. many thanks.

    Hey one_day,

Yeah, have a look at nightriders bike in this thread.... these are the pipes (i actually had a real look and listen of his bike which helped me decide!)...  they are very much like the stock exhuast really just straight through rather than the bulge through the middle:

    http://www.hdforums.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=71&forumid=1&postid=200768&view=topic

SE also do a high flow filter kit that uses the stock box and there are a few others available....  but they are all basically the same.  The only other air filter that I really liked was the V&H Duke... but I don't know what it is about the stock box.. i just like it the best and wanted to keep it!

Yeah I got everything from www.mandmcycles.com, he can source a huge range of stuff and the prices are great.... you need to go to the links he provides (the manufacturers sites) and write down the part numbers of everything you want, then just fill out a quote form.  With the exchange rate at 91/92cents the prices are unreal....  I have 18kg of stuff on the way and the postage was approx $140aud but even so it works out a hell of a lot cheaper.

Thanks DJS, been looking through all the catalogs..

Question, with the PPC5 are people buying them with or without the auto tune module?

Just a quick question djs how long did it take to have the parts shipped over?

    Hey,

It took about 5-7 days before they actually gave to Fedex (he makes this clear on the website....  I don't think he has stuff in stock, so thats prob the delay).   But once Fedex picked it up it only took 4-5 days to get here.  With fedex you can look up the shipping number on their website and watch it on its way every step.   Yeah, can't remeber exactly as I was in no rush... think it was just under 2 weeks.  Also be aware that any order of $1000.00 AUD then you have to pay import tax and GST.... so keep your orders under $1000 to avoid.

    hey,

yeah there is another guy I know on this forum and the same thing seems to have happened to his.  we went out for a cruise the other day... we both have straight shot slip ons.  he has the straight shots ONLY and no quiet baffles, and I have the quiet baffles, high flow K&N and the fuelpak.  we did a couple start comparisons mine is considerably faster off the lights.  I have not lost any bottom end torque, in fact mine is noticeably different from stock... it almost wants to jump of the start when you take off.

i don't think swapping the exhaust for an SE would make much difference... i have always believed if you do the exhaust you need to do the filter etc for proper running.
