2007 Road King trannie

I frequently look at the American HD Forum and I noticed a long controversial posting that has been very active over the last year or so.

It seems that a lot of people with 2007 baggers have been complaining about 3 things with their bikes. I don't seem to see the same subject talked about in here, maybe I'm wrong. Anyway the 3 problems are/were...

    1. The motors getting pretty hot in standard mode. Can be fixed with changing the ecm settings and changing the breathing with pipes and air cleaner.

    2. Chattering noise in take off and also in higher gears if you lug the motor a bit. Not recommended anyway.

    3. Fifth gear sounding really noisy and some saying the sound is like a bucket of bolts. As we know the 2, 3 and 4 gears are bevel, whereas the 5th gear is straight cut, I think that's how it goes. Anyway 5th is noisy, and I've even noticed the whirring noise on my 08 Road King. A lot of customers in America were pretty pissed off and the Company was taking a long time to admit there was a problem, and when they did it was "we are working on it" There was heaps of postings about the bikes, most had the similar problems, some were happy with their bikes. Trouble is, I am still wading through the thread, and I wondered if any blokes in here, know about the problem especially if you have an 07 model. Maybe it was just the first batch of bikes off the factory floor, who knows. Some riders were demanding the gearboxes be replaced and even the new ones were excessivly noisy as well. Not Happy Chappies. All sorts of things have been tried, different oil etc. As we know riding with a screen and leg guards etc, reflects a lot of the motor noise up to the rider. Having aftermarket pipes obviously masks the sound as well.

Any one aware of all this goings on.  Cheers..................TC

You will always get a "whirring" noise when using straight cut gears. Are there the same complaints from Dyna's and Softails? Do they use the same trannies?

Further reading in the other forum the 08 has IDS which is rubber shockers in the rear pulley, that supposed to cure the "chatter" but won't change the 5 th gear whine.
I agree you hardly notice the whine with S&S pipes.
Sounds like 07 owners in America have been putting in IDS over the winter months or when they change a rear tyre. I will see if I can post the link to the forum thread..

You will have to copy and paste this to the toolbar up the top.

As I said this may be old news to you regulars, but it may help others.

When I purchased my Ultra Classic, I though it was going to hand grenaid after a couple of hundred Km's. I then took the leg shields off (summer) and the noise was gone. I think the baggers refect a bit more engine/tranny noise back to the rider.

Only use the Shockproof heavy in your Transmission.Use a NON friction modified oil in the Primary.Or you can use ATF in the primary.
