Hi all,

Ive just bought a new 883custom 07 model and still running it in (slowly but surely).

The exhaust tone (being stock) isn't quite the hd tone we all know and love.

The dealership said they would put some se pipes on for $650 fitted, but i keep

reading about air flow filters and fuel management being needed as well.

Can someone tell me what the slip ons are about, and if all the other stuff is needed with them, and a rough

cost on just the slip ons?

I've just finished doing these mods to my 883 Sporty.

Slip-ons are the mufflers on your exhausts, ie rear half barrel on your exhaust pipes. As you say the stock mufflers give the bike a very boring sound. Putting on some high-flow slip-on mufflers will give your bike not only a better sound but better performance as well. There are many choices with slip-on mufflers, the S&S are good and $650 fitted sounds like a good price.

You can put slip-ons on your bike without any other modifications needed. If you want a bit of extra power on top of the slip-ons then many people put on a high-flow air cleaner. However the combination of high-flow mufflers and a high-flow air cleaner will require you to install a fuel tuner to richen the fuel mixture because of the higher flow.

I've just done the fuel tuner and air cleaner upgrade to mine after having just mufflers for the last few months and it's worth doing but a little more messing around than just pipes alone.

My in-law had a heritage softail with straight thru's and suggested doing that, but the shop reckons thats going to be way too loud.

Is there any way you can remove one baffle ( got two pipes on it) without screwing up the timing etc,

Or alternatively, can you bore some holes into the existing stock baffles to enrich the sound ?

Yes, you've got to be careful which mufflers you get, there's another thread in the sporty section about my experience with my first slip-ons the Cycle Shacks, they were way too loud, I had to get rid of them. I ended up going for the Screamin Eagle SP mufflers which are a bit on the quiet side but still heaps better than stock.

I wouldn't recommend only removing one baffle because you're likely to throw the balance off between your cylinders. I have heard of people drilling out their stock baffles but this is not an easy job, you've got to use a hole saw to get the baffles out and longer term I've heard of problems.

Best and easiest way is to get a set of slip-ons, Screamin Eagles, Vance & Hines, S&S they're all good.

Angus, mine has slip on mufflers from HD development in Melbourne and they cost approx $400 . A Scremin Eagle air filter kit will cost $250 from Harley City in Melbourne, you will fit them both yourself with couple of tools and you dont require any E.C.U modification. this will add approx 9hp to std and sounds great, like a Harley should,        cheers Bretho

i have just orded an 883c a few weeks ago. when i was at the dealers i asked if i changed the pipes n air filter would i have to upgrade the stock ecm they told me no. so im guessing there is a bit of lee way there some where to play with these things. it could come back to what stage u go to the higher the stage maybe a ecm change is the go. i dont no? im only guessing. i havent heard a stock bike running so may be i better start looking at pipes i gotta have that sound i sopose ive gotta have the bank account to DOH.

I had my 883c delivered with the Slipons and i installed the SE high flow and no download, according to the dyno it was running perfectly and i ran it in very hard. After four thousand klms i pulled the engine down to do do the 1200 conversion and the pistons had no sign"s of detonation or running lean they were infact like new. So from my experience high flow and slipon mufflers do not require a download or injection tuner, cheers Bretho.

The dealer told me the same thing so I did it, ie pipes and AC with not fuel tuner and like I said the bike didn't run good at all. The proof is in what happens when you try it. Now I've got the fuelpak the bike runs and sounds heaps good.

Jim, I would agree with the majority of it, and i don't believe in the slow and steady run in procedure as i have seen too many new engines burn oil after 1000klms and have never seen oil consumption on a hard but fair run in. Besides all of the for and against arguments, the new Harley's have a 2 year unlimited klm warranty so if it shit"s itself from hard riding it will still be repaired by the stealer and i have not heard of a engine rebuild under warranty
in this neck of the woods.
As for the performance of my 883c with slipons and high flow and no tuner or download, i done a lot of riding with big twins and i had a lot of people ask me what i had done to it as it is obviously not stock.

Well...I decided to get some new Cycle Shack slash cut slip ons.
I picked them up from us e-bay delivered to perth for $235.
Frasers said they would fit them for nothing with my first service so i dont have any warranty problems.

Just wondering how much a se air filter system has cost people in recent times? Cheers,

you can get S&S mufflers with a screaming eagle high flow air kit and have it put on in the work shop for $500 thats what i did any way on my 2007 custom sporty befor i took it home from the shop new.i do have to say it sounds shit hot

Ive just booked in for my first service in 2 weeks time at frasers,
They quoted me $250 which is better than i thought (was expecting $300 +).
I just clicked over 700kms , and dont know if i'll get time to reach 1600kmsdue to work
and weather.
Does anyone know if they would do it if i only get to 1400 ish kms ?

Hey all, Im considering the V&H shortshots to replace my new cycle shacks,
does anyone know if you need a gasket kit to put the V&H pipes on.
And does anyone know whether theyr'e overly loud with the baffles IN. ?

not know about v&h but i took the baffles out of my s&s pipes sound nice but to loud for me as i ride every day to work i have pissed off lots of dudes where i live as is lol

I've heard a number of people say that the Rush pipes are good. Good thing about having the choice of baffles as well. I recently tried to get the baffles out of my Screamin Ealge SP mufflers and found it too hard.

Well, ive ordered some V&H shortshots for my girl coz the cycle shacks are starting to piss people off round my neck of the woods, so if anyone wants some almost new pipes cheap, im getting rid of them towards the end of november. Bummer really, i luv em.

I was told the other day by another harley rider(not a forum user) That haveing striaght through unbaffled pipes can lead to valve burn/damage. Anyone know if this is right?.

I have a 883 with a 1200 kit put through it ( ao I am told) and Kuryakyn Hypercharger and K & N filter. I have looked and there is nothing inside my mufflers.
