I thought you were allowed to pass stopped traffic at walking pace. But maybe wrong?

Im not an expert on the law I did make the call some months back to ask and was told that if you pass on the left hand side then thats illegal as you are passing on the inside in that lane and if you pass on the outside then you are in the lane of the car you are passing as there is no room outside of the lane if that makes sense. So its an illegal pass no matter what side so I just play it safe and dont do it anymore as its a fine and pointsBut I gotta say I see heaps doing it but I choose not to take the chance

I,ve seen Coppers on bikes doing it, but they are a law to themselves, cos they can legally speed as well  ( But only with there "Blues and Twos" on, Which they often as not haven,t!! )

Thanks guys, I just rang the police station and they said its fine to do as long as use indicators. When it is a red light, it is much safer to filter to the front (thats what the cop said to me today).

Yup illegal, if they see you and wish to enforce or can get near you to do it in their cages.

I saw it on a ton of sites when looking up other road statutes. Its an urban myth that you're legally allowed to do it in Victoria - but at carpark-freeway time, you're doing everyone (including yourself) a favor. Another thing like the pipes I guess, make a prick of yourself and they're only too happy to hand out TINs.

California is the place to go if you wanna do it legally, just don't leave that state.

The other urban myth is exceeding the limit when overtaking being fine - most time its understandable (with reason) but technically and strictly it is also a breach and a plod on a bad day could give you some TIN love.

I don't think anyone really minds, a bit like the exhausts - especially if you're not pulling silly stunts - but there's bad days for the cops, and/or crackdowns and its something they have on us if they want.

yeah well, i got done today in Brisbane   running down the left of 2 lanes of standstill traffic, normally don't do it but i thought what the hell today, i passed an unmarked car, so he gave chase, i pulled up and waited while the copper made his way to me with lights and sirens blazing, not too bad an outcome i suppose, $80 and no points, gave me a lesser charge than what i could've got,

the bloke on a jappa after me that he pulled up got the book thrown at him, , , his own silly fault for coming down the left with a cop car with all the lights going in front of him,  shoulda looked a bit harder

Line splitting (overtaking moving traffic in the same line) is illegal in WA.

Line filtering or as it is known in WA "line sharing" when the traffic is stopped at the red light is legal providing you do not cross the white unbroken line on the approach to the intersection.

So if you on the freeway during peak hour and the traffic is moving at 5 km/h you can not split the line but if you are on any other road and there are two, long lines of stationary traffic you can ride between them, you can cross from line to line (using indicators and while the white line on the road is still broken) but as you are getting closer to the intersection and the white line changes from broken to unbroken you have to stay in the line you entered before the line changed. If you ride over that unbroken line to the other line you get $150 and 3 points for "Crossing the white unbroken line on the approach to the intersection"
