I guess you need ask yourself a simple question.

Am I going to use it or not.

Do I want the badges and pins.

The rides are much better with this forums, members and they are good blokes.

No brainer if you ask me.

The only reason i keep my international (not local) HOG membership up is to get the 10% discount on parts, for me it's worth it also if you travel overseas you can save on renting bikes.

Just because you have it don't mean you have to be a local member and ride with them. I guess it just depends on how much you spend at the dealers and how much you will save.

dont forget that membership of a "recognised club" generally gives you a small discount on your insurance as well ... so for most casual riders , the $75 could be well spent.

    Hi all,

Some good arguments on this post regarding HOG membership. Based on the comments I think I might give it a miss and see if there are any rides in the ACT through the forum.

    Cheers all.

enforcer..... why don't you go on a local HOG ride or two and make a decision for yourself, you might just be surprised. HD Forums doesn't have a monopoly on good blokes!!! :) If you're getting 10% off your parts then you're still paying 20% too much!

I just renewed my membership for 3 more years, I am on the committee for our chapter, we are having a meeting next week with some changes to be made.
I am going to chair our meetings, try to bring them back into order, formalize things a lot.
    as for the ride rules.
We will ride as a group, that is what we will ask, if some people who like to take off and meet you there, can.
we used to stop every half to 3/4 hours for a smoke (stretch) break, I think no more, if you want to have a smoke, you stop, the group can continue.
some members don't want to ride just from pub to pub, so we will be looking into some of the tourist stuff in the areas we are going to visit as an alternative, then at a predetermined time we will meet back (properly at the pub) and leave for home together.
with an aim of trying to get the fun back into the ride and the politics back to the meetings

I got the membership with the bike but haven't acted on it. I think I might do an intro ride in January and see what the people are like. No harm in checking it out. This forum though is brilliant - a great bunch of helpful idiots. Thanks fellas.

I was told I had to go on three (3) Provisional Group rides which consisted of two qualifying rides before we could be considered to join their club.

Fair comment "enforcer" !!! That's a good way to piss people off before they even turn up! I never heard of such a thing before!

Our mob (Perth) have nothing as formal as that. You can even turn up on a Japper and nobody minds! It's true though that you have to be an International Member in order to be a local member. It's a bit pricey but so are Harleys so I don't worry about it too much. In 6 years I've never been to a meeting, only on rides, and nobody has ever so much as commented on it.

It's good to hear both sides of the story though. Maybe there's another chapter somewhere in the other direction?

yup...sounds like a whole heap of bullshit to me....I reckon some-one should just start a forum for folk that love to ride...no rules...no membership fees...no bullshit...just a forum of like minded folk...say...oh..I dunno...a HD Forum or something......

    HOW RUDE
I think they have an empire they don't want to give up
we don't have any rule that states you have to do anything, I was a member 4 years before I met another member, never mind going on a ride. Way to turn off potential members

"enforcer", I meant THEM being the ones pissing people off...... not you!!!

I just read that link that you sent and I have to wonder what made someone make such ridiculous requests for a new member!!! I completely understand why you haven't rushed to join them. All I can say is that it appears that HOG clubs must vary from club to club. Here in Perth it's very

easy-going. Hardly any rules at all...........they like us to ride in staggered formation in a large group............. seems reasonable (and safe) to me................ that's about ALL the rules. If you fall off your bike you'll probably get fined a dollar to the charity tin............ it's all in good fun..... nothing

    stupid.

I would do exactly as you if I were there where you are.

I now fully understand your comments. I hope you don't judge all HOG chapters the same way. It's now apparent that there are a lot of variables between people and between club "leaders".   Perhaps there's another HOG chapter within reasonable distance but perhaps not too. The

closest friends I have were met through the local HOG club. I hope that one day you will be able to say the same.

In the mean time..........ride with who you bloody-well want to ride with!  :))

    all the best mate

My 2 bobs worth.......I kept my subs going , the discount, badges, magazines and the maps. (good maps, if you don't have GPS) I don't belong to a local club, as they are too far away. Went to one HOG rally out of curiosity, don't think I will bother again, unless it's close by.

The 10% dealer discount is now gone.

It has been replaced with a new card that gives you points on the things you buy

with these points (dont know what value they are) you can buy goodies (probably in 100 years) at the dealer

The only real plus has now gone from HOG memebership

I have been a HOG memeber since 1996 and will retain my membership

Is it worth it - thats higly debateable

If you dont like to ride with them or participate in events then probably no

The new local HOG magazine is a lot better

but is it worth the cost?????
