v.rod using oil

I have recently purchased my first harley, an 09 night rod special. It seems to use a bit of oil, nearly half a ltr in 1000 ks. Is this normal? The dealer is doing an oil consumtion test and have yet to get the result, anyone have a similar experience? I hope it does not become a drama as I realy like the bike.

Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Is a bit smokey on start up after sitting, valve guide seals? Anyone had the same problem and what was the cause?

A few months ago when I was at Frasers Perth a guy with a red v.rod had same problem, they had no idea what the cause was, he told me was going to keep taken it back until they fix it.

Yep my VR has near 10,000k's and it has done this scince new, go to the "1130cc site - V Rod forum" as lots of info on this, seems many claim by using Mobil 1 VTwin oil it fixes greatly, I stll run SE oil but still does it. Have not gone to the Mobil 1 route yet as not ridden as much. It does not seem to worry it too greatly with using amount you are using, give the Mobil 1 a try (probably you'll have to wait until the consumption recording is done first).

welcome to the forum mat good luck with ya oil problem , my 95 roadking uses a lot of oil aswell but i can see where it is going (all over my bike and legs )

Welcome Matt, .........Scotty has forgotten more than most mechanics know...I'd be on to the stealer every day until they fix the bloody problem for good............

Thanks, seems to be using less oil now, still a bit smokey on start up after sitting though. Will see how it is going at next service. Ive been in the 'nut house' for some time but thanks anyway!

Oilconsumtion test complete- dealer says very little oil used, still smokey after start up after sitting though, must be still bedding in. If it keeps smoking after start up they said they will look further- valveguide seals? Nice ride though- looking to upgrade the suspension, anyone done a change on a night rod yet?
