harley kits?

    Hey Guys,

I've recently moved downunder from the UK (approx. 3 yrs). I'm kicking myself for not bringing my bike etc. I've taken an interest in building a bike from a kit. Does anyone know of any commercial H-D kits available in Aus or can be shpped from the states? The only 'local' ones I can find are the Australian Godfather chopper kits, I'm looking for more a 'stock' Harley kit. I'm hoping to build a standard H-D, more for the challenge than the art.

I've already had a mate offer a box of bits from his shed (lol). Interestingly, I could count a least five breeds of Harley in the box!

Any advice will be gratfully read...

    Cheers

Thanks for the info Flan, one of the problems is finding a US company willing to ship to Aus. I assume this is due to the Aussie gov's importing rule for vehicles and Harley-D Australia having distribution rights. Although, this is for bikes - I would think kits are treated similar to Harley parts.

I'm gunna have to do more reading of the rules and regs, even before trying to find a suitable kit.

Mate, do your self a favour and buy one and customise it. It is a big headache doing what you want to do.

Sounds like you like to tinker as well as ride, then the only bikes for you are shovelheads and earlier, pick up a shovel for 10-12k the throw another 10 at it over time and then you have something of your own, or you could resto it back to stock. Building a kit bike is only bolting new stuff together and as the laws change all the time, a headache, buy something pre 74, no blinkers, can be noisier, 1 mirror, only need brakelight switch on rear brake and a couple of other things. If your looking to build a big dollar chopper check out just bikes its full of them, why?, because they have no soul, they are all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$.When its all about the money there is no passion.

If you buy a cheap one and customise it to suit, at least you will still be able to ride it. If you buy a kit you can't ride it until you finish putting it together.

    Hey Guys,

Great comments and thanks for the tips. I don't think i'm aiming for a chopper. I used to restore my old bikes in the UK (an old Honda and Suzuki), I found if I bought one needing to strip down, repair and rebuild it was twice the job as a kit. Therefore I thought half the battle a kit - plus no finding breaker parts.

I think i'll go for buying a stock and change some of the styling here and there, no stripping and rebuilding. I thought the challenge of building a kit would give me a great sense of achievement...or not. *mental note to self* stop watching bike building shows which have all the equipment and skills!

    Cheers

Mate, I looked at doing a kit build for a while, might actually give it a go later in life when I have more time and $ .... but really not worth the hassle first time round more suited to slow project building, as everyone else has said better off buying and stripping/customising.

however if you are hell bent on a kit bike most of the major brands are available in Oz and are sold as ADR compliant, use google I managed to find most of them, like big bear, custom chrome HDR, ultima .... list goes on

    Good luck
