G'day Grumpy
I've got a black 98 1200S. It's stock apart from a 42HSR Mikuni, SE Airfilter, SE slip ons and a K&P oil-filter. I've had mine for nearly 2 years, bought off the Trading Post from a guy in Mannum. I know of 3 others, a black 98 in Naracoorte and I rode in behind another black one at the Badpenny run at Lake Mundi, apart from carbies it was identical to mine. There is a 96 purple one at Frances, just north of Naracoorte, I dragged him once .
I've done about 15000k's on mine. Only problem I've had is breaking 2 speedo- tacho brackets, they are built too thin for the weight they carry and they don't like being ridden fast over rough roads.
I've had mine up to $2.10 and something . I don't know what revs it was doing, it was shaking too much to read the tacho.
The best book I've found for Evo's is 101 Harley-Davidson Evolution Performance Projects, K Woodring and K Love. My girlfriend bought me a copy from Fishpond.com for $10. Good book, well written with heaps of dealer only info. Tells you stuff like:
Find out your engine's birthday. Find the 10 digit engine VIN, it's stamped somewhere on the right side of crankcase, mine is in front of the oil pump, behind the oil lines, you might have to look hard as only the first digits are easy to read on mine (if you have the engine apart its stamped on the inside of the left case). If the first 2 numbers are 32 it's an international 1200, 24 is an 883, 25 a 1200. The next 2 numbers are the model year, 96 etc etc. The next 3 numbers are the day the engine was built, 001 is the first of January, 002 the 2nd etc etc, if you are lucky it will be something early in the year which is fast to work out. The number 090 would be March 31, January has 31 days, Feb 28 (29 in a leap year) and March 31 days, add them up and you've got March 31. Get the date and year, wack it in your mobile phone calender and it will tell what day it was built. Mine was built on hump day (Wednesday) just after lunch, the guy had just been made engine builder of the year, got a pay rise and got lucky the night before.
Dude.
