WHERE'S YA WHEELIE BIN?: Stolen wheelie bins that started life in Moreland are making a 4000km one-way journey from Melbourne all the way to Darwin. Picture: BRAD FLEET
Moreland City Council in Melbourne says it is losing about 1500 wheelie bins a year, with some of them showing up not only in Darwin but also Alice Springs.
Mayor Lambros Tapinos says the wheelie w-obberies were no laughing matter.
"It costs $100,000 a year to replace about 1500 bins that go missing," he said.
Mr Tapinos said staff received a call from a Darwinite a while ago to alert them to the fact they'd found a bin stolen from Moreland.
But the purloined piece did not make it back home.
"I get a feeling our customer service people didn't know how to handle that one, and didn't get their details," Mr Tapinos said.
Media down south reports a thriving black market in bins.
People using bins for rainwater, grey water, or compost are believed to be the biggest culprits.
The mayor has no hard evidence to explain how bins have made it to the Red Centre and the Top End, but he suspects dishonest renters who move lock, stock and wheelie bin to the Territory.
Moreland - which starts about 4km north of Melbourne city - held an amnesty for bins a couple of years ago.
Mr Tapinos said "300 honest residents returned bins".
"(But) during that period we had more than 300 bins go missing - which is standard."
must be Bluey... he's gone to ground lately
One of 'em is gunna get done for bin abuse now......disguised as road rage!! Call out the RSPCA for bins!!

Man 'threw bin through bus window'
AAP
13 October 2009
A MAN is facing charges after throwing a rubbish bin through the front window of a Sydney bus, police say.
The 26-year-old man was charged with malicious damage after the alleged incident in the beachside suburb of Coogee at about 11.20pm (AEDT) last night.
It is alleged the man threw a bin into the path of a bus as it travelled along Arden St.
When the bus stopped, he then picked up the bin and threw it at the front window, causing it to smash, police said.
The man, whom police said may have been drunk at the time, was granted bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on November 11.
