I'm looking into replacing the stock compensator on my '08 Ultra (stock TC96) with the SE comp.

Question...does the primary case have to be removed to remove/replace the rotor?

    Thanks!

    Just a quick update...

I did replace the stock compensator with the SE comp (HD p/n 40274-08).  The inner primary had to be removed on my '08 Ultra (stock TC96).

I can honestly say the difference is substantial.  The start-up knock is gone as well as the surging I experienced at low-load cruise settings.  The entire drive line is far more solid and much quieter.

The comp cam and sprocket showed signs of wear after 18,000 miles of use.  The lobes on the comp cam were worn and polished...the sprocket showed similiar wear.  Splines on the crank and extension were very good indicating (to me) that the cam and sprocket received most of the punishment.

While most riders are probably happy with the stock unit (and I was to a point), the SE unit is, IMHO, worth the time and money.

Replaced the compensator on my 07 softtail the other day and like the rest of you blokes it was quite a different bike afterwards. Had to perform the grinding to the inner primary cover to get the rotor out without having to dismantle the bike. Could see straight away the cause of the bang on startup, with the ramps on the cam being worn and the marks on the original rotor where the cam had been slamming into it. Once I had the rotor out I also noticed that the springs where rattling around in their housing. My old '91 Electraglide had a separate spring assy but the springs were nice and tight in it, so I was a bit concerned that these ones were loose.

I highly recommend this upgrade for anyone with one of these crappy standard compensators. Bike rides really well now and shifts are smooth and positive, no bang at startup and very little surging at low speeds.
