hi ive had a few repaired its best to have the cover that your welding bolted to a 3/8" to 1/2" flat plate  as so it stops a lot of distortion or pulling you can have a section out in the plate to get the torch in  clean & V the crack out !st , check out the gasket surface on a flat bed , cheers

hi, 70's harley alloy castings are not  100% aluminiun they have  zinc etc & at best must be very clean to weld  & not so easy to do, tig weld can use choose a  stick thats close to it compatible,  also if you scrape the stand on the ground going around corners it dosen't help,   also if the spring is too tight against the cover or banging against it  will also wear it down    cheers

hi,    if you weld it you can  fill it up with extra meat as to  have more  thickness in that  part were the stand rest aganst it,   or you could stitch weld a rectangle peice  about 4 or 5 mm thick  for a wear pad  for extra life , cheers

Do you really need to weld it? It is not structural only oil containment, Stop drill the crack to stop it spreading, clean it well or stick it in the dishwasher(when everyone goes out) try Devcon, araldite etc on the inside. I wrap old inner tube rubber round my stand where it touches the primary, and secure it with a cable tie, works well.
