NZ bikies protest against insignia ban

By New Zealand correspondent Kerri Ritchie

    Posted Tue Sep 1, 2009 1:00pm AEST

A city in New Zealand has started banning gang insignia in public places.

The north island city of Wanganui is home to members of about 10 different motorcycle gangs.

It is now illegal for gang members to wear gang insignia, including patches and t-shirts, in the CBD and in certain parks.

Greg O'Connor from the New Zealand Police Association says bikies who break the rules face big fines.

"You've strutted your stuff and now for the first time New Zealand society is saying we don't like gang members, we don't like you bullies," he said.

Gang members say it is an attack on their rights and rival gangs put their differences aside to take part in a joint protest against the new laws.

Only one person was arrested for wearing gang insignia.

half a dozen Warriors fans or all-blacks jumpers heading your way in NZ is a heart racing experience, lets see how far the law will be extended.

It's not hard to work out were the coppers live, even in big towns. If they don't want the heat with the job, dont apply for the job. I would'nt want the job as i couldn't handle all the drunks you have to deal with and having to tell some mother their child just died. The Kiwis are doing the same a over in the states were it is illegal to wear any sign of your club, i think it is the Mongles.

Whats is this world coming too - more laws by a government trying to regulate anything and everything we do and say!!
So much for democratic countries and governments - do we wear our underpants on the inside or the outside of our clothes? -
please tell us NZ govt, as we can't make a decision for ourselves or have NO CHOICE!!!

Kiwidave - I may have been a bit ignorant in my view as I do not have experience of living in NZ where there may
be trouble with gangs, be they street guys of MC gangs, but it just appears that the govts can bring in any laws they
like - there is no openness in govts and our basic freedom and choices are taken away all the time...circumstances
may determine this to be a good law, I don't really know.....sometimes I just feell we are all so regulated by laws
    and rules.......thanks for your comment.

If you kill a cop in NZ, some gangs offer instant protection for free.

may show the mentality of the "gangs" in NZ, I find it pathetic.

I'd say, "wear what you want" but nothing "vulgar" and club colors don"t fall in the vulgar category
