Ignition swith relocation for the Dyna

    Ok....After trying to find some of my pics for this I finally said screw it and I'm just going to show what I have for it.

    Now first off, this is a very easy mod to do for the Dyna.

    My bike is a 07 Street Bob.

    I did this mod back in the spring of 08 (U.S. spring time that is)

    All the parts you need for this is are:

    Barrel key ignition switch, I suggest you get the trim ring with it unlike me.

    If I remember correctly, a 2" hole saw.

    And the last things you need are some wire to lengthen the wire going from the ignition in the neck to the console.

    The first thing you need to do is find the center location of the console.

    Use the hole saw and cut the 2" hole in the console. I used straps to hold the console down to the work bench.

    Now.....under the neck you'll find and piece of plastic that protects the wiring. If you want to you can remove the tank for ease of access but I left mine on.

    Pull the plastic out from the neck. if you reach into the neck towards the ingnition you should feel the wiring block. (not easy if you have big paws)

    Lift up on the wiring block and pull it out. Now your going to need to unhook the wires from the block (mark which wire is removed from which spot on the block as this is the same position that you will need to place on the new ignition switch) and feed them through the hole on the left side of the neck so they can go up to the console.

    Now the wires are not going to be long enough to reach the new ignition switch. I bought some wire the same guage as the ignition wires. ( I would say what guage it is but I forget)

    Now......your fork lock will still work fine but now you will have two keys for the bike. One for the fork lock and the other for the new ignition.

    Measure the length from where the wires end to where your new ignition is and crimp on some clips.

    Now because I was a cheap ass and didn't but the trim ring for the new ignition I used a black rubber fuel line as the spacer between the ignition and the console.

    The hose that I bought was thick enough to keep pressure on the switch so it doesn't turn.

    At this point all you need to do is hook up the wires and replace the console.

    Now it should look like this when you get done.

    I wish I still had some of the pics I had when I did this but I lost most when my puter took a shit.

    Any questions feel free to ask.

    Hey OSP,

    This is  a good mod, I started getting interested when the other Scotty put up the info on that kit you can buy.  But as you've shown all you need is the switch and a few wires.  I reckon I'm going to do it to my Bob.  What specific switch did you use, ie part number if you have it?

    I wonder also if it's possible to get the switch keyed the same as your fork lock?  Not a big deal I guess but would be nice.

    Well....If you guys want to cheat a little you can order the center console for the SE dyna.
    It is a chromed version of the street bob console that already has the hole in it for the ignition.
    I don't have the part number with me but if you go to the dealership and ask to see the manual for the SE Dyna it is in there.

    I checked into it when I first got here from the states and it was going to cost me $350 for the console.

    Gents,

    There is even an easier way to relocate your ignition switch.
    I got a console from 2008 CVO Dyna which fits directly instead of the original SB console. It wasn't very expensive but certainly not "free".
    It is also chrome not black like the original SB. The benefit is that you have no "cutting" to do and it has a perfect factory finish.
    Took me about 1 hour for the entire mod. (took absolutely ages to remove ignition connector from the old switch). If anyone interested, I have all part numbers.
    Unfortunately the only pic I have handy doesn't show the switch very well.

    Vladt:

    Love the chrome console on the Black Denim.

    Can you post the part numbers?  Also did you use the switch from the Dyna CVO model?

    TIA

    Here you go mate. Sorry for the lateness of my reply, been away for a while.

    61712-08 - Screaming Eagle Dyna Dash with gasket;

    71313-96A - Ignition Switch and two keys. Include your current key HD number and request to have the new keys matched to your existing key when ordering.
    The switch is off CVO Dyna. It is also identical to most switches used on Softails.

    70766-08 - Ignition Switch Bracket;

    70706-08 - Speedometer Gasket;

    That's all you really need. The mod is extremely simple and shouldn't take you long at all to implement.

    If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
    Btw, all parts were bought from Zanotti.

    Cheers

    That looks great with the crome.

    Just a question, the ignition switch bracket , I guess thats what the switch mounts onto?? I did a search and it came up with no such part #. Is 70766-08 the correct munber?  Tah.

    Hi Guys,

    Sorry I've been off the board for a little while.
    Glad that most of you have taken on the ignition switch mod. Makes the whole key issue redundant.
    Barney - sorry mate, will be keeping my original dash.

    Cheers
