    Hi all,

I'm about to make up some apehangers so interested to know the actual regulations for SA. I doubt that it will stop me putting them on but...

I know it doesn't matter much coz my bike wouldn't pass anyway due to exhaust and it also comes down to the mood or attitude of the nice policeman on the day but it wouldn't hurt having a copy of the regulations anyway.

    I found this:

    http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/sa/consol_reg/rtsr1999308/

    which led me to here:

    http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/sa/consol_reg/rtsr1999308/s55.html

    is this the correct?

    cheers

ROAD TRAFFIC (VEHICLE STANDARDS) RULES 1999 - REG 55

    55—Steering gear and handlebars

            (1)         The handlebars on a motor bike must extend at least 250 millimetres, but not over 450 millimetres, on each side of the centre line of the vehicle.

            (2)         In taking a measurement for subrule (1), mirrors and lights mounted on the handlebars of the motor bike are disregarded.

            (3)         The lowest part of the hand grip on the handle bars must not be higher than 380 millimetres above the attachment point of the handlebars to the motor bike.

            (4)         Hand grips on the handle bars must be fitted symmetrically.

            (5)         If a motor bike has the head stem as the steering pivot point, the horizontal distance from the midpoint between the head stem bearings to the centre of the front wheel must not be over 550 millimetres.

just read through heaps of crap today, the 380mm from triple tree to bottom of hand grip is no worries, the apes I'm making fall below that criteria

but they also can't be more than 380mm from lowest point of seat to bottom of handgrip.

    that is absolute crap!!

my std mini apes which were apparently meant to be as high as HD could go legally measure at least 500mm from seat to bottom of handgrip.

Fuckit... my bike is already illegal because of my pipes so the apes will go on anyway ...........

    Handlebars

In NSW this only applies if you alter from original specifications.

On motorcycles manufactured before 1 July 1988

    a) The handlebar must have the same shape and be of same length on either side of the front wheel and steering head assembly.

    b) The distance between the extreme ends of the handlebar must not be less than 550mm.

    c) The highest point on the handle bar must not be more than 380mm above the top of steering yoke.

    d) Where the highest point of the handle bar is more than 205mm vertically above the top of steering yoke, the distance between the extreme ends of the handle bar must not be less than 660mm.

On motorcycles manufactured after 30 June 1988

    a) The handlebar must have the same shape and be of same length on either side of the front wheel and steering head assembly.

    b) The distance between the extreme ends of the handle bar must not be less than 500mm and not more than 900mm.

    c) The height of the lowest part of the handgrip must not be more than 380mm above the lowest
part of the upper surface of the rider’s seat

    d) The horizontal distance between midpoint of the steering yoke bearing and a point vertically
above the centre of the front wheel must not exceed 550mm.

These are the standards in NSW, should not be much different to any other state. Hope it helps.

yep thats what I found too. Its this section that screws me:

    c) The height of the lowest part of the handgrip must not be more than 380mm above the lowest
part of the upper surface of the rider’s seat

but like I said, my factory bars wouldn't comply either. That sucks.

bike is 2008 street bob so the seat to triple tree regulation would apply to me.,

I haven't got my std mini ape bars on at the moment, I've got drag bars on, but my bike measures 300mm from lowest point of seat to triple tree so that only leaves 80mm and i measured the mini apes on the floor and they are more like 180 from bottom of bar to bottom of hand grip so thats 480 (give or take a bit)

The bars i am designing are 200 from tripple tree to bottom of handgrip so that is 500 total, 120mm to much.

like i said, i'm not positive about the standard bars as I don't have them on anymore. They might be fine.

The bottom line is now I know the regulations and that my new bars won't pass...

but..... stiff shit, they're going on anyway.

    Hi Guys.

Just checked my reduced reach bars on the RKC, and although the bars are no higher than standard (just further back) I think they fail the 380mm seat-to-handlebar test. They're not very high at all! Sounds like a crap rule.

    Gonzo.
