FXDF Clutch Question

    Hi

I own an 09 Fatbob and very happy apart from the gearbox "Clunk" when changing into first gear after initial warm up I love it.

I have noticed that if I start the bike up in gear  (With the clutch pulled in of course) the bike tries to move forward. This is when

the bike is cold.  Also the bike when in gear /clutch pulled in and engine off -  is very difficult to push forward manually.

Is this a normal feature of a HD?

Mine does the same thing. Thought it was just normal.

I tried what you suggested Scotty, but she still clunked going into gear.

Still, just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean it doesn't work! LOL!

I noticed the same on my 09 nightrain, Scotty is correct and a little rev does helps. The H/D gear box does seem a bit "clunky" but I think it is pretty normal for them, I also found after the rev dies down ease it into gear slowly don't jab the shifter and it will click in real smooth

from experience, bikes with wet clutches will often preform how you descrided when cold due to friction between the plates and oil being thicker when cold, some types of bike it will be more noticable than others depending on clutch design, amount of plates, length of pull/plate seperation, weight of oil etc .... the bike being difficult to move when not running or trying to move when starting in gear is again due to friction between the plates which is stronger when the clutch isn't spinning, centrifical force helps the plates seperate

Has anyone tried changing oil weights/brands or type, staying within reccommended specs ???

Try holding clutch in for 20 seconds, then ease it into gear.

    Works for me.

Read it somewhere else on this forum a while ago.

my current bike shifts very quietly and easily and neutral is easy to find
but, of course, clunks when cold and engaging first, which I see as a very normal occurence
I think it is a bad idea to try to start a cold bike in gear to avoid the clunk
a few blips of the throttle while working the clutch lever has always seemed to have a positive effect
clutch adjustment will not remove it
just remember.......... few gearboxes running factory lube weight wear out because the oil was too thin, but many running a heavier weight suffer poor lubrication, and flog out earlier because the oil is simply too heavy
