Ok i'm confused, which is not unusual for me. As i mentioned in an earlier thread i have fitted the Tmax in my 09 softy and downloaded map 401 and the bike is running great. In the meantime i contacted Zippers to ask them if the self diagnostic function in the speedo will still work and they said yes, as long as i use Firmware 4.6 or higher ??  When i installed the Tmax we downloaded the latest software "full version 2008 1.14" but i want to know if  "Firmware 4.6" is part of  "full version 2008 1.14" or do i need to download it seperately ??  Please excuse my computer knowledge as i don't have any.

    Peter,

The firmware is the software that runs in the actual hardware unit. You download it seperately.  You can do it from one of the menus in the Smartlink program.

I don't have the software installed any more on my pc since I sold the Sporty, but I just had a look at the manual on the Zippers site, see page 157 it takes you through the firmware upgrade process.

Link to pdf manual here: http://www.zippersperformance.com/downloads/pdf/SMLIV_V20080904_FINAL.pdf

Thanks chops, but i'm still confused, you say that the firmware is the software ?? So does this mean when I downloaded the latest software (full version 2008 1.14) that the firmware is part of it ?? A yes or no answer will do, be patient with me LOL.

The software for your PC is the (full version 2008.1.14 per your example). Once the software on your PC is installed, you use that to download the firmware (for the ECM) to your PC. Then you use the PC Software to upload the firmware to the ECM.

Software = program for your PC
Firmware = program for solid state devices - such as your ECM

    Hope that helps.....

Whew, thanks for your patience guys, it all makes sense now. If you have already tried it Scotty I probably won't bother. Zippers sent me a message saying they are not aware of the "Miles to go function" being a problem ?? Go figure, they did say they have seen the problem arise when standard bikes have had the battery removed or the ECM fuse taken out and, that the function could return with up to about 50 cycles of the ignition key ?? We will see.

Another query is, when i look at "basic settings" without the computer hooked up to the Tmax and click on to, for eg: "engine alarm temp threshold" or "decel fuel cut" even though they are highlighted they say "requires firmware version 4.5 or higher" ?? Does this mean they are not operating as they should ?? Or put another way - why are they highlighted if they are not working ??
