Coming back from the run on Saturday there was a shocker of a head wind on the freeway, got me to thinking the way the Street bob is with the mini apes it's not too good for aerodynamics.  Was wondering how much of a difference a windshield would make?

I've never had one so I don't know, so those who've got em how well do they work?

KC, I just recently bought a detachable screen for the Fat Bob after a high speed run from Newman to Broome left me a bit sore from hanging on for 9 hours. There is still plenty of air circulating but it stops your helmet from trying to rip your head off and the windage and buffuting is greatley reduced. Cornering takes a bit to get used to but overall it was a good investment. I also like the fact that I can go out at night around town with out having to wear clear glasses.

scotty they are not the norm, but almost every bike i see that is traveling any distance has one. especially up here.

The fact you can put it on and take it off in under a minute is a bonus. If they wanna call me a girly man, let em go for it!!!!

Put a detachable screen on my 06 wideglide for a 8,000 km return trip to Darwin . Fantastic !! had a head wind for the second day - worked really well - lessens fatigue , ride is more enjoyable
Can remove it in a minute if I want to

Only way I'd have one would be on a roadking, and I ain't getting one so in short I wouldn't have one.......
If you put one on then you should take all shit flung at you in good humour, and do it if you want..............

I only really use mine on longer rides (cause i hate the look) but moreso lately due to my neck and shoulder probs............In winter it stops me jacket from refrigerating but its the diff it makes in how far i can ride that makes me use it..........I dont like the look of em but to hell with that it works a treat.............

easy .. of course you should have one if you are doing lots of k's.  rode up from Philip is to sydney last yr in the day which included the first 200k's in rain ...  arrived in good nick .  NO WAY can you do it without.  those nancy boys ( incl some of my mates ) who insist on not having one dont have the stamina for the big rides.

Ok dudes, I'm sold sounds like more pluses than negatives.  The main thing I was after was avoiding getting ripped backwards and it sounds like they do the trick.  I've looked at getting a detachable so I can pick and choose when I use it.

I'm a big beliver in comfort and don't really care what others think, so off to flea bay I go.....

Just got a quick detach lexan sports shield for Julie's custom from Harley, $295.00 and it's lightly tinted with a subtle harley emblem embedded in the shield. Great value.

Here's my windvest KC, I find it pretty good but it does take some getting used to, the setup is critical, angle etc....I can remove it in a couple minutes...

    Hey KC,

I fitted a detachable shield to my Sporty, then to my Lowrider, and of course my RoadKing comes with one. They're great for doing what you want to do - keep the wind off your chest. My experience:

    Pros:
    - keeps the wind off your chest
    - enables you to more easily converse with the pillion
    - keeps stuff thrown up by cars, etc off you and the bike
    - keeps bugs out of your teeth (you might like eating bugs?)
    - the quick detachable ones are really that.

    Cons:
    - they create air turbulence coming up from under your arms which, if you're wearing a full-face, creates noise (but not as much noise as not having a screen).
    - when it's wet the rain is kept off your chest, but it is a bit more difficult to see where you're going, mainly because the screen is not right up against your face like a visor or goggles are.
    - when it's hot you don't keep as cool.
    - they make you look like a girlie poof.

    I wouldn't be without one.

Screens are great - no bugs or flying objects to hit you in the face and you arrive at your destination relaxed and ready to go some more

KC I had a Softail and I didn't really like them (windshileds) so I didn't bother. Then I discovered how good the RKC looks even with the windshield. I am one of those riders that say, once you've ridden with a screen you will never go back.
This was reinforced only the last couple of weeks when PS lent me a street bob for the week. I was glad to give it back and ride with a screen again. I do take it off at times, takes about 15 seconds, and go on short runs for a change. But for any long trips I definately go with the shield. Some of the smaller shieldds on any of the Harley range look okay I rekon. A friend has a Harley Screen on her Sporster and it looks good.

I tell you what some strong opinions on this one, I had no idea the good old windshield was such a hot topic.  Funny how most of the negative opinions are based on the look, is that being a tad vain?  The idea for me when I'm out riding is to enjoy, I've got nothing to proove, so anything that makes the ride better is worth it I rekon......

When I had the windshield on the heritage, I found the constant buffeting was a strain and cut the screen down to 8". It was still a problem and I fitted a batwing fairing with a 2" screen. Very comfortable and with the cut down screen, wind only hits on the face. Keeps me warm in winter, reasonably dry in the rain and has helped the overall handling of the old girl by pushing down the front end. Would I go back to riding without a windshield, yes. Would I go back to riding without the batwing, definately no.

I went away early this year to Lacelles over the Vic Border and used my shield on the Heritage. And boy was I glad I did. Minimal buffeting and then it rained on the way back. The blokes I was riding with hunkered down, me I just sat there and enjoyed the trip. Yeah they don't look right on the bike but what the hell, I had no issues with bug splatters or getting knocked about buy the wind. I am glad I didn't get rid of the screen when I bought my bike.

funniest moment i ever had with windshield was ridign with a group on the south coast when we came across a swarm of locusts ... A FRICKEN BIG swarm ... lol . fuck me we were riding around 100kph and then all of a sudden my mates were fuckin weaving and all i could do was laugh my arse off. other than that moment , my screen has been struck on more than one occasion by gravel thrown up ..... but i suppose if you just do criusing around the city lookin vain then you dont really need a windshield ....

As most here know just got back from my 14th crossing from Melb. Perth. Middle of winter, 13 crossings no screen 1 with. I reckon I could have turned around and rode back if necessary. Never again will I have to do long trip without one. The Ducks Nuts.
