Excuse my ignorance; so if I powdercoat  do I need to paint as well to achieve desired finish? or can I use powdercoat to achieve matt black?whats involved in powdercoating? something best left to the pros? Steve

???? well I'm confused now, been a long time since I've seen powder coating done (high school I think) but from memory we used to heat the parts to be coated then applied an even coat of the desired coloured powder which melted and adhered to the metal - hence, "powder coating" yes very tough long lasting finish. Chrome plating is done with electricity where a current is run through the metal parts while it is submerged in a chroming solution, also called electro plating.

times may hav changed but, lost a lot of brain cells since school ???

POWDERCOAT IS THE EASIEST, MOST HASSLE FREE, SAFEST AND PROBABLY CHEAPEST WAY TO DO A GOOD BLACKOUT JOB ON CHROME. THE FUCK UP RATE IS ALMOST ZERO.

I will solve the powdercoating of chrome parts problem once and for all. Some say you can do it some say you can't do it. Here is the true story 100% FACT, cos I just did it today with some handlebars.

YES IT IS VERY EASY TO POWDERCOAT CHROME PARTS - AND YOU CAN USE ALL THE POWDERCOATS - SATIN,  MATT OR GLOSS.

YOU DO IT ONE OF TWO WAYS,

1/ ROUGH THE CHROME SURFACE UP WITH A FINE/MEDIUM SAND PAPER AND THEN TAKE IT TO THE POWDER COATERS, HE WILL DO THE REST

2/ JUST TAKE THE PARTS TO THE POWDERCOATERS AND HE WILL DO THE PREP WORK, WITH EITHER SANDING OR A SANDBLAST.

North sydney powdercoaters do a good job, they are cheap and they will do the prep work for you. The guy hand sands small parts, like handlebars.

FORGET PEOPLE WHO SAY IT CAN'T BE DONE, FORGET STORIES ABOUT CHEMICAL BATHS OR REMOVING THE CHROME USING ELECTRICITY - ITS ALL NONSENSE.  You sand em a bit, clean em down with some metho or something, what ever you have in the cupboard thats not greasy, then you take em to the powdercoater.

    IT'S 100% doable - 100% easy and 100% bread and butter for a powdercoater

One set of chrome handlebars and an air filter Cover from Nth Sydney powder coaters 20 bucks. I slipped him another 10 buck and he said he would buy a few cans of Resches with it. Nearly asked him for the tenner back

The handle bars were 100% and the air filter cover was about 97% perfect, Black texta fixed up a small blemish about the size of 8/10ths of a matchhead.

    BARGAIN.

After the handlebars were coated I droped them and put a scratch on them about the thickness of 1/3rd of a matchstick and about 3mm long, so be careful, they will scratch.

When installing them also be careful not to scratch them.

I've had a lot of the chrome on my roadking painted in 2pac gloss black straight on top of the chrome [just a light sand]. The first bits were down 4 years ago and no signs of chipping or flaking yet. To my eyes the bike looks a lot better.

Never heard of 2 pac. Is it a brand or a type of paint. Do you buy it in spray can?
