    hey mean 1

would you use motorcycle oil in your car??.....i dont understand your theory on this.....i dont get it....i use only Spectro synthetic oils in my harleys.....Spectro make harley specific oils for every part of your bike..not cheep..but how much was your bike??...pay the bucks get the best...it only $139.00 for all the oils you need for a full Synthetic oil change on a big twin harley engine. This equates to 4 Quarts Platinum Fully synthetic 20w50 motor oil........ & 1 Quart of Platinum Fully synthetic 6 speed gear oil... & 1 Quart of   Heavy Duty primary chaincase oil...thats not much $$$ every 12 months for a full oil change.... even less for a sportster they dont need the extra gear box oil... mate dont use car oil filters either..genuine harley filters only....see my signature below ...

I used to work of Ausfuel in the NT as Warehouse manager for their ludes distribution, sales and lubes tech support while doing so learn't shit loads about oils.

My opinion, as with all oil manufacturers DON'T use car oils in bike ... ever! The reason "bike" oils are for bikes is because bike engines run at different tempratures, revs, torque loadings, etc, etc, etc than cars, they also run wet clutches - cars don't, car oils are loaded up with friction modifiers which will gum up if they are heated too much or over stressed, they will also clog clutch plates and fuck em, they are designed to handle different rev and torque loadings and for water cooled engines with a constant temprature range. You may get away with using a car oil and think it go's ok but ya can't always see the damage or premature wear it causes stright away. Having said that there are a select few oils available that can be used in bikes, usually race oils that are changed very frequently like Castrol Edge synthetic (used to be formula R) - wouldn't reccomend it for Harley though, but BMW and a few other euro and dirt bikes seem to like it.

Stick with whats reccommended, even if ya have to sell ya left testical to get it, cause spending up to $150 on oil every service is better than buyin a new donk every few thousand k's.

Also pick a good oil and stay with it, don't keep changin brands.

After all that Mobil 1 V-Twin, Spectro or Pro Am sound like they should be the goods, or let the dollars flow and buy genuine, these have all be formulated and tested for Harleys.

Oh - and if can afford it go with a synthetic or synthetic fortified over mineral once it has been run in.

Well i don't know, but if synthetic oil is so good, why do the V8's with flat tappet cams wear a cam out just running them in on the engine dyno? but if you use say that special oil Castrol make for older cars the flat tappet cams last, it's mineral based oil and has the friction modifiers in it. also mineral 15w 40w turbo diesel oil works ok with flat tappet cams.

i'm not knocking synthetic oil i'm just asking you experts why if it is so good at protecting your motor why can't it protect flat tappet cams from wearing?

i remember when they removed that friction modifier from oils as it was supposed to be stuffing up cat converters, at that time people in the know said don't use these modern oils in Harleys as air cooled motors rely on that friction modifier.

then everyone tells me synthetic is the best, but if you use it in a brand new bluepinted V8 that uses flat cam followers it will wear the cam out just runing it in. so can't synthetic cut down friction wear?

    i'm no expert just asking?

ps i use Redline oil in my motor and Redline heavy shock proof in gearbox, i can feel the improvement in shifting, but have not saw even 1kph increase in trap speed or and HP increase on dyno with redline over anybrand 15w 40w mineral base turbo diesel oil changed all the time. so i'm not 100% convinced but my motor looked ok after 1 1/2 years of drag racing with the same redline oil in, just looked ok drag racing and riding hard on the street for five years useing 15w 40w turbo diesel oil and changing it regular and useing HD filters.

Thanks Rodder, have heavy shockproof in gearbox now, shifts beautifull & quick, got the 20 50 redline in motor, but will try some race oil ,when i get time to put it on dyno again see if i see a gain.

thats a good idea pulling it out after race day and reuseing it. ( probably run through a filter.)

Well im new to mobil 1 v twin....Yesterday i did my first oil change, And what ever was in it was thin, dirty and prob cheap shit. Now this is only my 2 cents , But i dont know what all the fuss is about on mob vtwin, Some say oil pressure is better and there air temp has dropped , Well today i did about 250k's and didnt see any diffrence in anything...........In my 95 roadking i ran normal mobil oil and it cost me $25 for 4ltr, (from a bike shop as well) , Yesterday i paid $85.77 for 6 qrts ,

After talking with a tech from mobil, He was saying that repco oil is made by mobil , But didnt say anything else about it, Then i rang a old friend that works for repco , And he told me it was mobil oil and that 95% of taxi use it. Im not saying im going to use it but you just don't know.............Anyway im not 100% sure about vtwin mobil 1....................................

there is more opinions on this topic world wide than facts that can be independently checked, having said that I have seen the oil/load bearing test been done by at leat 6 different companies and guess what, their oil was the best one tested, so here is my OPINION...

I use the stock HD360 mineral oil and change it and the filter every 5000km, why?,1. because it's the oil recommended by the manufacturer, 2. because after using it for over 10 years in 3 different bikes I have had no reason to change to another oil.
Yes I know that they will always recommend their own oil but I don't think they would sell you a dud to put in your engine as this would cause too many warranty drama's.
Why 5000k's?, because its easy to remember, 5000, 10,000, 15,000 etc

I believe the upsell to synthetic oil by the HD dealers is a money grab, why?, because up until a few years ago they told us never to use it in their engines and now they are telling you it's ok to put in everything it's abit like " do you want fries with that "

I believe that the HD360 rating is about the amount of time the oil can be taken to a overheat situation be for breaking down totally ie; 360 times.
HD engines are very similar in some ways to diesel engine except the compression differs big time but they both run alot hotter than a petrol engine and operate under what is deemed extreme conditions, this is why HD tell you that if you need oil then and can't get HD oil then use diesel oil. Car oil will never cop for long the heat generated in a HD engine while stuck in traffic.
I have mates that only use diesel oil because thats what their truck runs on and some of their bikes have done well over 300,000 k's

again, this is only my opinion.
