    Hi

I'm having dramas with the bracket holding the speedo / tacho on my 03 1200S. The 2nd one has just brocken at the mounting holes.  The 1st was allready brocken when I purchased the bike and admittedly the 2nd was an ebay used item (cost $15AU    New is approx $300) .

Has anyone else had simular problems and if so any quick fix.  I can get this one welded and hopefully strenghened but its a pain.  Otherwise a bloody great fun motorcycle, rode a 1200 rubber mount as a loner the other day, smoother yes but not as much as I expected and a little to sanitised for my liking.  I'll stick to my solid mount thanks.

The later rubber mounts possiably dont have the fracturing guage mount problems though

    All the Best

    Bloke,

I remember a post a while back on XLForum about people mounting the speedo bracket on the headlight brow, you could possibly do this and cushion the speedo bracket at the top with some rubber washers:

I can see the mount breaking at the same place if installed as per that pic. But rubber washers seem a very sensiable option. After welding and maybe strenghening with another plate over the mounting holes I'll endevor to secure the bracket using rubber or maybe neoprene washers top and bottom. It must be our exellent roads contributing to this problem as I've not read much on OS forums regarding bracket failure

    Thanks

looking at the pic up there i think you,d have more of a chance of it breaking like that ,the speedo and tac are quite heavy and  there is no support under them at least the original way you can tuck some of the wireing loom under the guages and it will give them some support it does on mine and mine vibrates heaps .one thing that might help is if you make up a flat rectangular plate and drill the 2 mounting holes either end and put that under your washers will give the plate a bit more support as well

    Bloke,

I have a similar setup to the one in the photo, except, I used alluminum tubing from Bunnings, that I cut to a length that sat the gauges at the height I wanted them. To stop the vibrations, I straped on a cheap camera case made from a nylon material & foam. Never had any problem with the bracket breaking + I stow my sunnies, face mask & a few small tools in the case. It also protects the gauges from being blasted by the rain. Might look a bit dagie but I guess you could use a leather tool case for better looks.

(Just in case anyone is curious, that small leather bag under the headlight holds the steering head padlock.)

That is deffinately a case of function over form.

I have cut a piece or 2mm plate to the shape of the idiot lgt holder and mounting plate, welded it on underneath the original bracket. Then I drilled out the holes for the idiot lights and the lampholder mounts, painted and baked the unit with wrinkel black Hi. temp. paint and fitted it in the stock location. Looks as if it's an original item just hope it lasts.

    Thanks for the replies

Still trying to get used to these picture uploads. Well if any one is after a speed bracket i make these. They are cnc routered one piece from solid 25mm alumiumim then chrome plated.

Hmm is that 25mm Al or 2.5 mm? Looks good but I suspect it still may crack around the mounting holes.

I eventually cut a piece of plate and ground it to suit the shape of the flat part of the bracket that mounts onto the top tripple tree. Then I welded it to the original, drilled out the holes for the idiot lights and two mounting bolts and painted it in wrinkle black, as it was originally (XL1200S) and so far so good. Looks original and seems to take the hiding that our rough back roads dish out.

Still chasing Ducatis' over rough winding mountain roads and even catch the odd one on occasion.
