They're perfect bikes for the riding your looking to do. They've got great speed and you get the joy of riding a dirtbike on the road.
The motard version looks like fun too

I bought one of the first ones that came into the country years ago and then sold it to a mate that still has it. Only issue with the early models was cam chains/tensioners were a bit flimsy. Later models were corrected and I havent heard a bad thing since.
I just recently picked up a brand new 09 model DRZ400 as they had them for a ridiculous price at Peter Stevens in Adelaide. With the help of my contact inside, I got it for $7,600 ride away with 12 months rego. Suzuki had a bit of a sale bonus on them last month and I don't think there are any left with that incentive.
For the first 4 months of this year the DRZ400 is the best selling enduro bike on the Aussie market, so you are not alone in thinking this bike is a good one. But, price alone would have helped those sales figures. if you buy one make sure the dealer de-restricts it with the air box mod and the re-jet and muffler de-restriction.
I also have a B&B bashplate, radiator gaurds, pro-taper quad bars, bark busters & a rear fender eleminator.
Thet really are great value for the money, and if you are after a new one, I can see if my contact can arrange a special price.
Regards Bob
Here's some pics of the mods most DRZ riders do to there bikes;
Rear fender replacement bracket with LED shorty indicators (saves about 5Kg in weight) $150
Higher bend bars (I use Pro-Taper ATV bend with risers, I'm 6'3") Barkbusters, Gel grips.
Radiator gaurds, Bash plate, case savers, and light weight mirrors.
Case savers are a must ($95 on E-Bay) as only a light lay down will punch a hole in the cases and your riding day is over
