How do u know if speedo is the original?

I bought a beautiful 95 Heritage, one owner with 28000klms on the clock. I got the service books etc and the services stop at 22000klms.  The bike is clean etc but I have noticed that there is a wipe mark on the inside glass of the speedo cover.  I'm curious to know is it possible that the previous owner could have removed the glass and wound the clock back? And has wiped the glass clean when putting it back together?  Or is it a sealed unit? Is there anyway to find out if the speedo is the original eg. matching serial numbers etc? I've checked other things such as wear marks on brake pedal and handlebar switches etc and all looks good as new, just cant get past these wipe marks inside speedo.  Any opinions would be great.  Cheers.

    Sealed unit?
    Electronicly - don't know
But my 08 fogs the glass on hot wet days and when it does I can see wipe patterns on the inside of the glass.
This bike was test ridden around the block as part of pre-delivery after I watched it being unpacked from the crate (Box) and prepared and 2 hours after it came off the truck it came home with me.
28k = 2k a year = 40klm per sunday, yep, lot of bikes like that sitting around waiting till the household needs the $ so they can be moved on to a rider.

Ifs its a non-digital ODO then they prolly wouldn't need to pull it apart to wind it back anyway...if its like the ones on a lot of sportsbikes.
I thought digital milage ones could be recovered if tampered with, but I could be wrong.

Thanks heaps for the fast replies fellas.  I should have clarified that it is a cable odometre the old type (not a digital).  After going right over the bike I cannot fault it.  The owner was a nice fella in his fifties and supplied me with the original purchase receipt and stuff and to be honest I don't think he would be the type to wind it back or change the speedo but you just never know.  The engine feels tight so I wouldn't probably bother with a compression test.  Just thought I would check if there was matching numbers or anything.  Thanks again.  Gotta say I love this forum the knowledge is just fantastic.  Appreciate it.

Picked it up for $16500 unregistered and no Roadworthy.  Didn't need a thing for a roadworthy.  The bike had only done 1000klms in the last 4 years so I dumped all the oils etc when I got it.  Mate I'm very happy with my buy, I've been looking around non stop for the past two years and had nearly bought a couple but I knew as soon as I saw this one and him having all the receipts and paperwork just sealed the deal.

Thanks fellas. The wipe mark is only minor but as you guys have said - I think the condition of the bike reflects the klms. Thanks
