    BIKE - 09 Nightster - Vivid Black

Hi there, I don't seem to be able to find much specific information on the Legality of pipes and noise (especially in Victoria). I don't really like the sound or look of my nightster with stock pipes, however I hate dealing with the law even more, so I want a good pumping sound and a cool tough look without being a menace.

I believe I can get a nice sound and stay under the radar with SE Slip ons, the only problem is I don't think they look very tough. Now the V and H pipes look tough, but I believe they will raise attention from PC Plod. I have heard some comments that the V and H pipes have "reasonably good" performance. I am not hot rodder so I don't need a bike that goes like S*** off a shovel, it's the look I'm after.

    1. If I go V and H will I "MOST LIKELY" be ok with the law in Vic

    2. Would the sound baffle add on make any difference in sound or performance (noticible to a non hot rodder - cruise type of rider)

3 What speciic V and H pipes would be the best for an "unsus sound" as I like most of the designs

4 Will I have issues with V and H pipes and a SE heavy breather running the SEPT (and the TTS next year for warranty reasons). (i.e. is this a "Standard type" of mod

    5. Will this combination be good value for money

    6. Does anyone invsage warranty issues if the Harley guy does the install if I use the SEPT.

7 Anyone think I should just stick to SE slip ons

8 Anyone recommned another tough looking and sounding pipe, easy EFI configure with SEPT and TTS, and not a cop magnet.

I really do not like talking to police people for any reason whatsoever (especially exhaust pipes), however I respect the law for the sake of social order and Community Harmony

    Jimmy

I would just enquire with the dealer on what they would accept, I did with mine, and they said as long as it is mapped to suit , they wouldn't have a issue

    and as for the law

anything that is not a genuine part and stamped with the dec rating is going to get you in trouble, the old Screamin eagle comp exhaust aren't stamped and the cops know this

It comes down to attitude, both yours and the coppers

If you go around full thottle all the time shaking the shit out of window, expect to get pinged, or they have been told to blitz, expect to get pinged

I had big radius V&H on , went passed many a cop car without problem

but got done on a RBT stop at Xmas 2 years ago, passed the test, then he went over the bike with his torch until he spotted them, he didn't pick it for the nosie when I rolled in

Put on what you like, keep the standard stuff in the box for if you get pinged, play dumb if challenged ( I didn't know that officer, I just brought the bike) and avoid areas where coppers are blitzing

Ok, I've summed it up thus far. Get the pipes you want but if they are loud then don't drive around town like a damn fool and terrorize old ladies.. I will check out the other pipes mentioned before I make a decision - but I do like the short shots. I will keep the original parts in case of a Plod attack.

What I shall do is do the mods myself and film the process on my Sony webcam. I shall make a video on installing pipes, baffles, heavy breather, and then film the tune process with the TTS. The video might be handy for other crew who want to do similar mods.

As part of my pre install research - Are V and H short shots easy to install for the average muppet? Are their instructions in the box?

Will I need stuff other than a socket kit. Will I need gaskets and other Hooey or do I just buy the box and off I go?

If I do the install of V and H short shots with the baffles, will I have enough backpressure for the factory tune, or will the bike be farting and popping till I get the TTS tune sorted. So, in summary - is it the upgrade of the air filter story that initiates the TTS EFI tune process or does the pipe upgrade, SE heavy breather need to be done at once.

I was going along these lines. Week 1 - S and H short shot install. Week 3 - TTS and Heavy breather - Week 5 other non performance cosmetic mods. I just don't want to do it all at once as I cant do a whole weekend day without a ride. I have a stressful job and the weekend ride is the major way I chill out before heading back to the Cracker factory on Monday. If I don't get a ride in, I can tend to be short.

Did you say Nightster, I know a chick who sold one cause it wasn't cool enough or was that cause she really wanted a Softail in the first place.

Really cool thing you could do with Nightster pipes involves a gas axe or was that pipe wrap. Yes pipe wrap, black pipe wrap.
Toss the heat sheilds and go for it with the pipe wrap. You can get pre-rusted clamps to hold it with off the new bikes at a dealer near you or buy real stainless clamps from a hose supply shop and paint em heat proof flat black.

Vance & Hynes being "legal"... :) It should be so.

My only advice to Jimmy Jazz (welcome aboard the board btw) is maybe those Patriot Defender things... They switch open from loud and deep to virtually stock with a button you mount up by the switch housings. A great idea, BUT - 1. never seen anyone with them for a real life try out, and 2. Damn expensive, about $1000 for a set...

I say be cautious and go with V&H! After all, if you live near bogan hotspots, you'll find that v8's and dicked-around-with v6's can sound even louder and much more coarse than a Harley ever could.

Sure the nighster is a Gay old machine when it comes off the rack - with it's fairy filter, fart fart stock pipes and grey covers. But once I get the thing blacked out, TTS tuned, drag bars, V and H shortshots, and nail a chick to the back seat , it will surely rip the skirt off any pansy who climbs on board. The nighster is nothing more than a potential waiting to be potentialized. Its like I was as a young bloke from the country, a know nothing, then I smoked on the crack pipe and became the menace I am now.

Only kidding, I'm just one of the regular folks - another know nothin pencil pushin turd workin in the office next door - UNTIL 5 O'CLOCK FRIDAY

You work the torque wrench or just tighten by feel. You need any gaskets? Hows about the O2 sensors, any drama's with those puppies. I got a PDF for the install off the V and H site.

I park my bike next to a police station, most days, and still haven't been bothered!
