I think it was a good idea, it's easy for people to bag the Aboriginies because of the problems caused by a minority but I always try to remember they were fine until white man came along. Even though I don't think the government and people of today are directly responsible. If it helps their standing in society improve then I think it's good for everyone.

I reckon the Govt. apologizing is a positive thing. It's positive because: 1. The Govt. have publicly acknowledged that wrong was done to the Abos. 2. The Govt. has apologized for it.
However how can words make up for genocide, stealing their story & culture destruction. It matters what the Govt. do from now on I think, like trying to get them to work more.

    Talk is indeed cheap.

I worked in the bush and saw millions wasted on Aboriginal housing - they would build these things in the bush and the black fellas would either tear them down for firewood or would simply walk away. There are dozens of these places in the bush in WA. Now Rudd says one of his priorities will be aboriginal housing - I just hope to crist they don't keep making the same fucking mistakes they did last time.

Noel Pearson got it right when he said "welfare is the biggest hurdle to overcoming aboriginal hardship, no black fella can gain the self respect he needs while the government hands him money for nothing."

The term "self determination" is pretty accurate - it is now up to the black fellas to help themselves. I have employed plenty of young aboriginal people in my factory and will continue to do so but not one of them has seen more than 3 months work - they have all gone walkabout. Only one actually came back and I happily gave him his old job - he was a good young fella but like so many of his mob he got in trouble with the coppers and got locked up.

Nothing can replace the self respect gained by getting up in the morning and going to work to earn a days pay - and that is where the black fellas should be focusing now that they have their apology.

I have no problems with Aboriginals they are the original Australians and i respect that.

But i think they should say sorry for all the tax payers money that has been thrown at them and wasted, drunk, burnt, trashed or destroyed.

I have been up North to the missions they have been provided with and seen how they live.

Those Elder fellas need to kick some serious arse!
