I am fitting gear drive to my bike (getting rid of the tensioners) and while I am doing that I have been advised by Scotty that in my twin cam 88 with TMAX and SE muffs, Andrews 21 cams would be the way to go to give it a bit of mumbo. I have also been advised that Woods TW6G cams would do the job as well. I am not looking at doing any head work at this point and I am wondering if anyone on the forum has installed either of these cams ?? I just want to get a bit of feedback from people using these cams.
Well i have used the S&S geaer drive cams since just after they came out in about 02 03? as at that time i had already had to replace two sets of ajusters, then had a new set of cam chain adjuster (outter adjuster ) fall apart two weeks after fitting it, was lucky i got all the parts out of the cam chest b4 they went through motor. so i went to Gear drive, at that time i was running Andrews 55 with chain drive, a good frien in TN got me a new set of Andrews 55G and an S&S gear drive set ( just note not 1 HP to be gained eather way with gear drive just reliability ) latter i switched to S&S 625 still with same gear drive. my flywheels twisted out of coppoling on the crank pin and made my run out go way out, but as i'm profoundly deaf due to an accident years ago i can't hear the engine noises but hear the exhast ok. well to try to make a long story shorter. the oil pump on the crank sharft was stuffed had to replace that but the S&S gear drives were fine they have 80,000 hard k's up now still fine. so the point is the run out they are talking about is just that the gear drive will make some gear noise, so you will have a new noise but it will not hurt the gears, from what i've seen all Twin Cams have run out not one is perfect and nothing you can do. in the old days with EVO back you could rebuild and true the flywheels and balance dynamically if you wanted to change balance factor, but now you just take what you get and throw it away if its broke. but they are strong! and don't matter about balance factor, as old Harleys cam @ 60% i used to like 52% but was told by a guy in the know the Twin Cams come at 50 or 52% balance factor.
So Peter think about it, if you have ever heard an old Chev or\ a straight 6 holden they have gear drive makes similar noise. mostly pipes would drown it out a bit, but some people don't like the noise some do. think about it.
good luck
That would be good too Scotty but think the later cases have the cams apart more to allow higher lift cams, would that mean the oil tentioner cam plate from latter modle would not fit earlier models?
i also would like a Bobby Wood belt drive cam kit, but very pricy.
