Hi all. This is my first post and in the next month i will be chasing down my first Harley. My background has been dirt bikes and some road bikes but all have been jap. I loved them but time for what i always wanted. I have ridden plenty of harleys but never my own and that is about to change. I was lucky to make some money with a aussie muscle car lately so im putting some off my morgage and some towards a softail.I am not dead set on year or model but i know how i want it too look.I want it

Lowered,Western bars, foward controls,Billet rims with atleast 240 tyre. Single seat with the hugging short style front and rear guards. Not sure on exhaust style yet.

As far as the bike goes i would like a 2000 model or newer and at the moment im thinking either a softail standard or nightrain.Im willing to spend around the $30,000 mark. Now some questions. Im very new to harley ownership so any help would be appreciated.

Now to fit a 240 rim/tyre on the back.do i need a wider swing arm?

What price range for a set of rims and swing arm if needed? Im allowing $6,000. Is that enough

Where is the best place to source, bars, lowering kit, exhaust, fwd controls?. I live south of sydney.

If i decide to rake the front a bit more and extend forks. What cost am i looking at roughly and who should i see to do it.

Ok thats all i can think of at the moment. Anything you think i should know pleaselet me know.As stated im fairly new to this and dont claim to be a know all and i will take all advice on board.

    Thanks

Yeah love the look of many choppers but they are a little more modified than i like.I want a Harley for resale reasons down the track and my mods will be limited to wheels, bars, and things like that. Nothing too extreme.

    Hey Devo hows it going.
The things U are asking about are not cheap and unless U can do the spanner work U will have to pay for some of this work. If U are looking for billet rims expect to pay from $1500 up per rim. Most PM rims start around $2k and up. IF U want matching rotors Start around $300-500 Don't forget the price of a 240 tyre. You will definatley require a new swing arm and will also probally need to space out the primary and maybe gear box to allow room to get drive belt to line up.

In relation to stnd or night train will probally come down to if U like black motors or natural colour

best bars U can get are Burliegh, Exhaust do U just want loud and annoying or a deep rumble and tourqe, Sky is the limit with exhaust, The stnd and train have forward controls already but you can always change them. Pre 2000 and post 2000 are different. I have 3" extensions on mine to stretch out a bit as I find standard to short for me. Again PM or NESS is looking at the top end here $1500+

Easiest way to rake the front end is with off set trees. places like Pro1 sell them. It is not just a matter of raking out if U want to actually ride it as rake afects trail which affects stability and turning etc. Need to talk to some one in the know. U may also need to put extended fork tubes on as well so bike sits properly. U can buy rear loweing kits from most bike shops but if U buying a older bike U may need to look at new rear shocks as well. Most good ones don't come cheap.

I have spent over $7k on accesories on a new 07 softail and that does not go very far.

I have put some links below for you to have a look at. When I lived in Sydney many moons ago MCA was a great shop then and they seem to have gotten bigger so would be a good place to visit and scope out some prices and diffent types of pipes , wheels etc.

Good luck let us know what ya decide to do.

Hi. Thanks for the response. Yeah things add up quick. To get a heartland kit from a aussie supplier with smooth rim. renegade front rim and lowered i would be up for well over $11,000 fitted.I contacted hogpro.com in the states and they could supply there 250 kit, wheels etc and they come in about 3 to 4 grand cheaper. Has anybody used these guys. Is there 250 kit OK.Even after the exchange rate they seem far cheaper.

I was reading a link in the US HD forums and the guy in the US bought a heatland kit but was sent the wrong swingarm for his year he had a older bike and they sent the newer swing arm. It was an interesting articale as he was doing the work himself. He had not finished last time I had looked but if U troll through the softail area U may find the thread with completed info and photos.

    Hope this helps a bit.
