Kuryakyn ISO grip install with pics!

I thought I would do a post on the installation of my Kuryakyn ISO grips on my 2007 Sportster.  I would have found this handy prior to getting the new grips just to see what the process is, so here goes.

    See pics and comments below.

    1) First step is to remove your old left hand grip.  The grip is stuck on with glue to the handlebars so only option is to cut it off.  Installation notes recommend cutting it lengthwise with a sharp knife, then around closer to the controls.  I found I had to loosen the hand controls slightly to get the lip of the hand grip out from under the hand controls.  I found the old grip came off quite easily.

    2) Once removed it's recommended to remove any stuck on bits of rubber and glue before installing the new grip.  I removed any large bits of glue and rubber with a razor blade knife and then sanded the remaining glue off with a light grade sandpaper.

    3) One thing I noticed was that the ISO grips are slightly longer than the handelbars but considering the grips have metal bodies I didn't think this would be a problem.

    4) Prior to gluing the new grip on, I slid it on to the bars and then sat on the bike to ensure the position of the grip was right, then I marked the position with tape to ensure I glued it into the right position.  Glueing the grip was a little cumbersom, mainly because the small glue container is as hard as rock and I couldn't really squeeze the glue into the new grip easily.  But eventually I got enough glue in there and then slid the grip on.  The notes recommend doing this quickly as the glue dries almost instantly, although I found that I could roll the grip on quite easily without it sticking.  I did this to spread the glue instide the grip a little better.

    5) On to the right side.  The right side was reasonably straight forwad also just followed the instructions and found no surprised with it.

    - First step was to loosen the right side switch housing screws so that the housing seperates enough to slide the grip out.  Some caution is required here not to lose the brass stoppers which are on the ends of the throttle and idle cables.

    - Then loosen both the throttle and idle cable lock nuts.  It's recommended to mark their positions with a texter before you loosen the lock nuts for easy re-location after

    6) I found the cables once loosened were quite easy to get onto the new grip.  I didn't even need to use pliers.

Once all was done I was quite impressed by the look and feel of these grips compared to stock.

Those grips look heaps better than the stock, I'm amazed at how many people keep their stock grips when a change can really make a difference to the look of your bike. I've got a mate who has those grips on his Fatty and he reckons they're pretty good but he still gets a bit of numbing of his hand on long journeys, but, this is probably more to do with nerves in his arm than the bike, bars or grips.

Changing grips is an intersting exercise when you DIY..........especially fiddling around with the throttle cables if you're all thumbs like I am!!

    Mega,

Yes they do look great. One unexpected thing I found with the ISO grips is how comfortable they make your hands feel especially after a long ride. They are noticably thicker than the stock grips and take a few hours to get used to but once used to them I find them heaps more comfortable than stock.

I did need to adjust the throttle cables a couple of times after I installed them to get the idle returning right but all in all it's a fairly easy job and I'm no technical wiz trust me.

After having the ISO grips now for several months I'd highly recommend them.

    FS,

I didn't see a need to leave it there. The new grip has a rubber lip that butts right up against the switch housing sealing it off. You could leave it in there if you wanted to, would just mean that you'd have to cut around it as it's all one piece with the grip..

Instructions say to cut around the grip at the housing end. I chose to remove it so the new grip would fit cleanly against the housing and like I stated above the new grip has a rubber lip that butts up agains the housing so it's not like water or anything is going to get in there.

    RT,

Ok, well I assumed it was there to stop crap getting unger the housing but it makes sense to stop the thing sliding off. Enough said on this topic I think.

Hey all, I just put some chrome diamond grips on my 07 883 custom, i followed KC's instruction on the left side, and easy done, However the stock throttle grip was an absolute bugger to remove, took me a good half hour to get that rubbery crap off. Ended up just razor blading the lot off (very slowly)...and left the gromets on. Evenetually worked a treat though. How did you go with yours kc ?

    Angus,

Not sure if the grips you got are different to the ISO grips but the right side was easier than the left. I just loosened the switch housing and removed the whole grip then replaced it with the new one. Hardest part was attaching the cables but all in all it was pretty painless.

I know I'm revisiting this, I just get bugged when I haven't done something before...

I have some "stealth" style hand grips coming in the mail. They're non HD-genuine like the Kuryakyn. Anyway, I have been back n forth reading this thread and checking youtube videos.

Checking my 2008 Sportster (an XL1200C), I have three issues with the specifics.

    1. The right-hand stock grip is over the throttle tube and the tube contains the notches on the two cables. So then does the grip need to house these cables, or do you just glue up on to the tube. I expected some sort of lip to go under the housing, with its own notches...

    2. Err, what does little star-capped springed screw under the right-hand throttle housing do? (I know it locked the throttle when tightened... Guess it needs to be loosened to give play)? How to know ideal settlings seeing as I wish I hadn't fiddled with it now.

    3. I see KingChops has custom pegs as well - what in christ's name do you use to remove those split-circle rings that hold the pegs in? I have a few ideas but I can't see these rings lasting...

Cheers for your help in advance guys. Whilst my knowledge of automobiles is great in theory aspects, in maintenance and DIY I'm very much monkey-see, monkey-do!

Not sure about the aftermarket grips... but the stock right-hand grip itself at the base has a channel for the throttle cable and notches to house the brass ferrules. I put on HD Aeliron grips which had the same channel and notches built into the base end of the grip that when fitted sits under the handlebar clamp.
KC has a pic above with the ferrules out... but this one might help give the idea too of what is under the housing and what is moulded onto the end of the right-hand grip.

This one shows the grip once you remove the ferrules and throttle so that you can see the moulding on the end of the grip. It's not on a separate throttle sleeve.

Cheers for the tips and extra photos, too Trace.

I just got some genuine HD's set aside for early this week - might be best to try glueless. Thankfully the peg thing is a breeze now I have my head around those stupid-ass C clips!

The flame grips are on! They look as good as Swoody's too! If anyone can do these, first time, in under 30 mins they're of a higher being.

It took me around an hour and a half. First problem was on the throttle side I started with and the second brass ferrel I was reattaching decided to scoot and fell into the bottom of the housing. Not easy to get back up. I taped over the cableto the housing to prevent this again (which I am spruiking as a fine trick).

Then on the left hand side I tried valiantly to work off the grip. They sure don't f-around putting those on at the factory. I had to cut it off as directed. Kinda annoying, I was gonna do everything to have it off as normal and I got sentimental about it.

New flamers on, and pleased I got the genuines which are glueless on the left grip.

Project moves on to 'stealth' style pegs (non-genuine - lovely n easy too!) and HD chrome switch caps - which I hear are one of the biggest DIY bling nightmares of the lot.

Cheers to all for guidance in the grip stakes from the above posts!!! ;)

Yep, those ferrules are fiddly little buggers. Glad to hear you got 'em on and happy with the result. :)

What can make you wanna beat yourself up and belly laugh all in one...

After having the drama with the runaway ferrule (corrected my spelling), I put my tools in my guitar tech/roadie case as normal and noted I had one of those retractable pen-magnets (like a car antenna with a strong magnet on the end. For fark's sake...

Might come in handy when doing the chrome switch caps should I be so brave...

Hi all Got the grips today only took me 15 mins to install the pair. An awsome product , remember the back off your throttle cable adusters fully and remember the turns so when you re tension them, the throttle will spring return. they are so comfortable and the throttle boss takes the strain out of long rides.
