Changing over to Synthetic

I have just done the 1600 service and use genuine oil again...thinking of Mobile 1 next time round.

If I change to Modile 1 do I need to do a full flush of the old oil or will it be OK to drain replace oil filter and just drop the Mobile 1 in?

Will the residure of oil in the tank oil pump etc effect anything?

Same goes with primary and Gear box...I would like to use another oil other than the HD labeled stuff.

Any suggestions for the Primary and Gearbox.. would prefure to us the same brand though.

Thanks Scotty, postage will kill the price but I found a distributor close by, Mobil 1 V-Twin and 75W/90 it will be.

What are you using in the primary?

OK, this is straight from the H-D factory, from a very knowledgable fellow named John. Syn 3 is Spectro Platinum. FAIL Your friend "John" is full of shit. Spectro is good oil.

I like Redline heavy shock proof oil in the gearbox been useing it two years now. i like ATF Type F in primary, i use Redline 20w 50w in motor but its real pricey so a bit over kill for high mileage. all i do is drag race my twin cam now so works out ok. i inspected the motor a month back after over a year useing redline looks like it works.

Mobile is not in same class as redline but long story.

    Wildchild:

I would definitely recommend the Mobil 1 VTwin in the engine.

Spectro has an excellent full synthetic 75-140 specifically made for the H-D 6 speed cruise drive.  I have also used it in the H-D 5 speeds with excellent results.  I would also think Spectro in the primary would be fine.

    I personally use:

Mobil 1 in engine, Redline Heavy Shockproof in tranny, and Redline MTL in primary.

Hmmm interesting reply there ozroder...I to have seen a lot of these so called independent oil comparison test before in my 30 years of being a qualified Automotive tradesman in high performance engine building & tuning ...I think one of the best one's is the one where Mobil's top of the range mobil1  fully synthetic oil is compared to a few other oil manufactures bottom of the range petroleum type oils.. & guess whot....the  mobil1  comes out on top......these oil comparison tests are a no brainer...there is always a hidden engender  in the old independent oil tests....I have used the spectro oils for several years in my high performance jap bikes... Ducati's'.. & my harleys ...performance and protection is first class...I have actually seen inside the engines that use it ...and I can say I have never seen any excessive engine ware or had a oil related engine failure using the Spectro products....I have also used the Mobil products and they are also very good...

Well I have realy started something here...........Oils aint Oils sole..........Remember the oil add a few years back.

Keep the replies coming..........its good to here the good the bad and ugly on oils others are using.

Redline seems to be the top of the range due to reads on this thread but supply in my area may be an issue....I would rather get an oil you can get anywear when traveling.

MobileOne V-Twin is also on the top of the list. So looks like I'll go the MobileOne for the engine.......I can get the MobilOne for $14.10 a quart.........what are you guys paying for you synthetic?

Primary....concidering the same (MobileOne) any other suggestions?

Transmition....concidering mobil brand as well Scotty suggests (75W90) or better. Any other thoughts guys?

    Oil filter will be genuine.

A judge in a law court made what i think is a bad ruleing.

so they can advertise what i think is not fully synthetic as fully synthetic ( hard to explain ) but the what i call synthetic oil's are not cheap. the bull shit synthetic are cheaper.

the redline heavy shockproof gear oil don't need changing its thick, but my gearbox shifts beautiful with it in.

as i said motor looked good after runing @ 7,200 rev everytime i ride it, useing redline and only changing it once a year, the piston speed in a harley is very high at that rev. but i never seen a gain in trap speed over good quality mineral based oil. so no power gain at all, normally i would expect a cut in friction would give a power gain, could be that small a gain it don't show up but the redline costs a lot more than Mobil. but as i said i only change once a year don't seem to need top up.

Scotty, You must be sick of oil questions but I was told the 75/140 is better suited for the tranny...what are your thoughts.

    Thanks again.

Reading many posts in other forums,
Amsoil seems like it is a good oil although it's not easy to get.
MobilOne V-twin, I went around a few bike shops on the weekend and it seems to be readily available. Myself I get MobilOne V-twin from a distriutor for $14.10 a quart, and that's in the country north Vic.

Has anyone used Mobil1 75/140 in the trany, they say it make a difference in noise and gear selection.

Heres an interesting read on a guy that used for new bikes and got the oil analized......will change your mind using genuine oils.
Bike #1 will be running HD Syn3 in all 3 holes.
Bike #2 will be running HD non syn oil in all 3 holes, HD 360 multi-grade 20w50 in the engine, and Formula+ Transmission and Primary Chaincase Lubricant in the trans & primary.
Bike #3 will be Mobile1 V-Twin 20w50 full syn in all 3 holes.
Bike #4 will be running Lucas Motorcycle 20w50 full syn in the engine and primary with 75w90 full syn in the trans.
